Splitting from group Visa

Hi everybody!

I am travelling to China overland from Nepal.

I have done my research and know that the only way to get to Tibet, China is to travel with a group. In that case you are put on a group visa and have to travel with that group unless you split from that visa which is apparently possible to do in bigger cities.

I will definitely need to split from that visa as I intend to travel around China on my own after Tibet.

The question is how easy is it to find a group to travel with while you are in Nepal? What would be the rough cost of such a trip (to Lhasa)?
Does it cost anything to split from the visa?

I'm just considering my options - would it be cheaper and less hassle to organise it in the UK? One of the overland trips I looked at offers to take you from Kathmandu all the way to Beijing for about £1100. Or would it be a lot cheaper to organise it in Kathmandu?

A great big thank you if anybody knows any of the answers and is kind enough to post them!

In the busy months, it is very easy to find a group going to Lhasa.

About the cheapest I have seen them is far around $425 per person. Cheaper ones may exist, but that is the cheapst I have found.

The cost is probably going to depend on what type of passport you have. This is not free.

I highly recommend arranging it in Nepal over the UK. Everyplace I have researched that arranges tours of Tibet and Nepal that aren't based in Tibet or Nepal are much more expensive (usually 2 to 5 times more). If it costs you $425 to get to Lhasa from Kathmandu, you can take the train from Lhasa to Beijing for around $105. Much cheaper than the price quoted to you.

I travelled from Kathmandu to Tibet with Richa tours, based in Kathmadu. As much as i know it is one of the main tour providers in the city, the other tours are organized through them. So, here is their web site, but unfortunatelly under construction at the moment.
I stayed in Tibet, while the others went back to Nepal, and our Tibetan guide helped me to find a new group comming from Nepal, to join them on the way to Lhasa.
On the border he helped me to reassign to another group Visa, but!!! when i came to China, they kicked me out from the country, since this visa is not valid in China. It happened 3 years ago, so it might have changed in the last years. I had to go to Hong Kong to make a new visa and reenter China.

all the best

If you want to travel round China on your own after visiting Tibet, you should try and get an individual group visa (just your name on the paper) in Kathmandu. This is typically quite expensive and requires payment of a substantial premium.
