You can travel through the rest of China on a group visa as long as you exit China with the people listed on the group visa. If you plan on parting ways with the other people, or staying longer than the time the group visa gives you, then you should change the group visa into a standard Chinese tourist visa. You cannot do this in Lhasa. Your best option would be to try it in Golmud or Xining.
