One month in China in August

Hey all,

First time post so please bear with me if i miss stuff out. My girlfriend and i (both 28) will be flying to singapore at the beginning of august and then heading to china possibly via hong kong. We'll be getting single entry visas and have a budget of about US$2500 for the whole month in china. We want to exit china into Vietnam probably overland.

We would like to be able to see the beijing and great wall, shanghai, xian and the three gorges dam. Has anyone got any suggestions about a possible route or intinery taking in the above and filling the rest of our month out with scenic places and historic sites? Also is the above budget enough/too much for a month for two people? If anyone has any advice on how best to get to china from singapore - are we best going to hong kong first or should we end in HK before flying to Vietnam?

Thanks in advance

Hong Kong is an ideal entry point for China, especially since it's the world's best place to get a visa AND it's a good way of easing into the occasional madness that is the PRC.

There's a pretty good circle route (although I'd question going to see the Dam, because I think that's a waste of time, but I'm not on the trip) - that goes HK - train - Shanghai (sidetrips to Hangzhou, Suzhou, Huangshan?) - train - Beijing (+ wall) - sidetrips to Pingyao or others - train Xi'an - train Yichang (I think it's on the Xi'an Nanning Route, but someone - probably ellyse - will correct me) then you can exit out of China by flying from, say Nanning to Hanoi

2500 USD = 19334.5 RMB (current exchange rate). Assuming 19000 RMB and 30 days, that's about 633 RMB for both of you daily. You should be fine with that budget.
There're quite a number of budget flights from Singapore to mainland China or Hong Kong, you could choose to land in either. If you're not interested in Hong Kong (and could get your visas in Singapore) then you could just fly Tiger Airways to Shenzhen/Guangzhou/Haikou, out of which I would probably choose to land in Guangzhou.
For your itinerary, what are you more interested in seeing/doing/experiencing, apart from the major destinations you've already named? One man's meat is easily another's poison.
Cheers!

I agree on ditching the dam! If you want to see somewhere breathtaking and untouched--and it won't be there forever once the Dam floods it, go to Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan province, using Lijiang as a base.

And to me, no trip is complete without going to Yangshuo.

Internal flights to most places are frequent and cheap, you could easily ditch the Dam and add in one place (have a look a Yunnan province, it really is not to be missed).

I could easily sacrifice Shanghai, it's just flashy buildings and money...

As a resident of Shanghai, I kind of agree. Especially if you're going to be in Hong Kong - I don't know what Shanghai does better than Hong Kong, except for Communist Party history Or as a document to what the rest of China could be in a few years.

I would add a visit to Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou rather than the three gorges dam....You can check out my blog at Living, Working, Travel in China -- you can find lots of images and information on destinations in China...Have a good trip!

#5, is it just me, or is it that your blog cannot be viewed directly in China at all?
Cheers!
