Getting to Tokyo to Shanghai

I'll need to get from Tokyo to Shanghai on around the 2/3 August. I've looked at the boats from Osaka and Shimonoseki, but they either take two days, or arrive in Qingdao etc so will involve at least two connections. On expedia, the cheapest one way flights were around £300/Y70,000 which is really exepnsive for a 2 hours flight. Are they're any cheaper/easier options?
Thanks

Sorry to disappoint you but travelling is usually a trade-off between money spent and time taken. I don't think there're any budget flights into/out of Japan. The ferry for Osaka -- Shanghai might be your cheapest bet.
Cheers!

Hello,

is the flight really that expensive? My 4 flights this summer: Dallas --> Chicago, Chicago --> Shanghai, Shanghai --> Tokyo, and Tokyo --> Dallas costs me 1155USD. The flight between Shanghai and Japan is JAL.

Keep going and you'll eventually make it..

Honestly August is a very expensive month to fly from Japan. Yes, obon is during August but basically the whole month is ridiculous. Why don't you try for tickets at the end of July which can probably save you a ton of money?

I found a flight for 43,000 yen any date in august with Shanghai airlines. Try going through Yahoo Japan travel section.

Livin' the dream!

The discount flights originating in Japan only appear in Japanese language websites, like Yahoo Japan Travel cited above. If you don't read Japanese, you must either call or visit travel agencies that cater to foreigners and speak English. No. 1 Travel and Across Travel are two big ones. If you are currently not in Japan, there isn't much you can do until you come here since they won't issue tickets unless you are able to pay, most likely in person unless you can get someone to do that for you.

The cheapest fare out of Narita on 8/2 is Y55,500. Surprisingly, the fares did not rise so much for peak times in August for this and other low end fares. Since one way tix are very rare here, your best bet price wise is likely to be buying RT and discarding the remainder.

Given all that, I would suggest the ferry.

Thanks everyone for that. I'll have a look at Yahoo Japan and see what I can find there. Flights betwen Japan and China are such a rip off compared to smilar distance in Europe.

#6, you've just been spoilt with all the budget airlines in Europe, which isn't the case with Japan.
Cheers!
