Tours from Lhasa to Kathmandu - Availabiltiy

Hi, I am trying to find out the availability of tours and price. I've read in a few places that you should pick up a tour going from Lhasa to Kathmandu in Lhasa as it is cheaper. I am looking for about a ten or twelve day tour that goes via Everest BC. However, are these tours easy to pick up? I am there right at the end of August. Also, are they every day, every Saturday or what? I have seen a 12 day tour advertised online that is 1200USD and leaves on the 21st, however this does not fit into my schedule and their next tour starts too late. I am ideally looking for a tour starting any time between the 25th and 27th August. Many thanks in advance.

Most travel agencies in Lhasa do not have set dates that they leave for Everest or the Nepal border. Trips are arragned once people come into the office and arrange them. With the dozens of travel agencies now in Lhasa arranging this trip is very, very easy to do. All you have to do is go to a travel agency in Lhasa and tell them where you want to go and how long you want to be gone. It will take about a day or two to arrange. With the tens of thousands of tourists in Lhasa during the summer, many 4WD's leave everyday for Everst and the Nepal border.

Thanks, have you got the name of any good travel agents up there to look out for or an idea of the cost? Has anyone got any experience of these and how good the toru was?

I also wonder how much this will all cost. I'm looking to go to Kathmandu from Everest Base camp. Won't have much cash, is this possible? Price estimate?

I would try the FIT office at the Banak Shol hotel first. There are several others around Lhasa that can help you as well, but the one in the Banak Shol is probably the best. They have set itineraries, or you can make your own. Prices vary based on what you choose, the time involved, and the vehicle. The base cost will probably start at around 5000Y and up. That is just a guess, and is only for the 4WD and driver. You have to pay for your own accomodations and food. The base cost for the vehicle can be split among however many go in the vehicle with you, so it can be quite cheap per person.

I would not sign up with a tour on the internet, as they are much more expensive than making your own arrangements in Lhasa.

Agree with #5. Checkout the Banak Shol FIT and see what they tell you. Before the raiway opened you could get to Everest and back to Lhasa for under Y4000 in the winter months and for around Y4500 in the summer months. Due to a high increase in tourism though, about the cheapest you will find a 6 or 7 day trip to Everest and back is around Y5000 (though Y5500 seems to be a common price).

I forgot - you will also have to pay entrance fees to any sites you go to, and EBC also requires extra fees. Something to think about for those of you on a tight budget.
