Hong Kong to Vietnam???

Hi I was wondering if anyone had any information on getting from Hong Kong to Vietnam the cheapest way possible! Whether by sea or by air.

If we were to travel overland by train through China - do we need a visa for China?

any info at all is much appreciated!!

Probably by land through PinXiang in GuanXie province. Keep in mind that flights to VietNam are regulated by the Vietnamese to protect their ca$h cow (Vietnam Air) so all airlines flying into/out of Vietnam.

Yes. While you're at it be sure to get a two entry visa if you're crossing through China on the way back to Hong Kong. Visas can be arranged by some of the local travel agents or the CTS (China Travel Service - or something like that) in Hong Kong. I don't remember which one as I usually arrange visas from the consulate in San Francisco, CA USA BEFORE I go. Also be sure to get a Vietnamese visa too.

That last sentence is meant to read

But, you can check on http://www.kayak.com or http://www.odopo.com to see what your options are. If you're planning to fly to the China/Vietnam border (or close to it). It's generally cheaper to fly from GuangDong or ShenZhen like China Southern then it is to fly from Hong Kong (to anywhere in China for that matter). You check that on http://www.elong.net

I got a very good price on a Vietnamese Airlines/China Southern code share from Guangzhou (CAN) to HCM & back from Hanoi at Chinese New Year

thanks for the info!!

the thing is we're already in China and have used up both entries on our double entry visas. we want to visit Hong Kong at the end of our trip around China, and then we want to go to Vietnam - the thing is we don't want to have to get another visa for china, so we're looking for any possible way to avoid having to go back onto the mainland???

Seems strange to me that there's no boat HK to Saigon or Haiphong - but maybe not everybody thinks it's a great idea.

There are plenty of boats - cruise ships make that route all the time. But it's not really transport - it's a floating house of gambling and eating.

Ok, you have to fly.
Tiger Airways: Macau -- Singapore, Singapore -- Ho Chi Minh City
Air Asia: Macau -- Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur -- Hanoi
Jet Star Asia: Hong Kong -- Singapore, Singapore -- Ho Chi Minh City
Cheers!

Also note that I only listed budget airline flights, not the normal ones.
If you want direct flights, Cathay Pacific and Vietnam Airlines fly Hong Kong -- Hanoi; these two airlines and United Airlines also fly Hong Kong -- Ho Chi Minh City.
Cheers!

re #8, I think Macau - Bangkok, Bangkok-Hanoi would have slightly shorter flight times & might be slightly cheaper...
