where to buy prescription eyeglasses in Beijing

When I was in China a few years ago and using the Lonely Planet Guide (of course!) I remember seeing a listing of a place referred to as Eyeglasses Alley, or something like that, where a person could get very cheap prescription eyeglasses in Beijing. A friend going to Beijing and not using Lonely Planet (the fool) is having no luck in finding such a place, where she could have new glasses made for me from the prescriptions I gave her.

Is there anyone out there with the current book who can look this up and post the information on how to find this place? Many thanks to you.

Jay

Panjiayuan eye glass market, just up from the dirt market, south third ring road.

Cheers, Paul.

What is the turnaround time?

Just go and grow and go, go, go.

Yes, agreed with Nihaoaussie -- go on South 3rd ring road (south of Guo Mao) and take the Panjiayuan exit and the eyeglasses stores will be to your immediate right on the access road. (You can park (if you have a car with you) on the sidewalk) There are also other stores around town but the Panjiayuan area is good. Based on your prescription they could turn around your glasses in one day (few hours).
I just want to point out that frames are definitely cheaper than the US and the process of adding the lenses, but the lenses themselves could be no cheaper than the US -- it depends on what prescription you have.... You may be able to find basic lenses for lower cost than the US. You can check out my blog at Living, Working and Travel in China
