Help needed booking for Lhasa Tibet from Shanghai

We (2 of us) want to book the train from Shanghai to Lhasa but need a travel agent to arrange the travel permit without having to purchase expensive tour add-ons.

Has anyone done this or could recommend a reliable no-fuss travel agent in Shanghai?

Our time is limited - spent a while wasting time with a Lhasa-based travel agent who is getting less helpful by the day - and more expensive with the quotes.

Thanks, Steph.

you can buy the train tickets to lhasa 20 days in advance at the train station.
noone in shanghai can organize you just the permit - you have to join a chinese tour group to get to lhasa.
to avoid this, you can take the lhasa-bound train to golmud, buy the permit there, and then go on to lhasa.
or just go on the lhasa-train and try it without permit. some people told me that it workes!

I'm not so sure about that, #2.... never heard of 20 days in advance!
Try PMing Losang. He seems to know the best agents around.

I called Shanghai station, and they say you can only buy the ticket 10 days in advance. I heard there is a branch of the government travel agency to Tibet in Shanghai.. I'll need to look up the phone number.

Keep going and you'll eventually make it..

BTW, #2 intends travelling either 24th or 26th April. Maybe that person could report back 20 days prior and let us know if they managed to get tickets.

#7, I think you can't deal with the TTB directly- you can only get a permit through an agent, who obtains it from them.

#8, may be the TTB in Shanghai has a list of 'approved agents' (in Shanghai) that they deal with...
