Suggestions for 10 days with a Toddler at Easter!!!

Hi Everyone,
We were just about to pay for a trip we had planned which included a Yangtze river cruise and I was just browsing the comments on this, with obvious concern. We are used to back packing around Asia, but not with a 2yr old child and we usually go for longer periods so we don't normally need to be so organised. We were planning to fly into Chongqing, find a boat to jump on to Wuhan (or pre-book a "4 star type" one for the conveniece with a child), then take an internal flight (prebooked) to Xian and then back to Hong Kong (where we currently live). Now... well who could say? We are pretty keen for ideas if the Yangtze River cruise is really not so worthwhile. We have already been to Beijing and Shanghai and tend to add them onto business tirps or do in weekends. As we live in HK, short breaks are always an easy option for us which is why we were trying to do somehting a little longer and see a little more, somehting we couldn't do in a long weekend. Can anyone suggest anything? Originally we were aiming for around Yunnan but we thought it may be too cold at this time of year given the child factor, which is why we then chose the river cruise and Xian. We are flexible with destinations but as we have a child who does not like to sit still for very long (same as any other child) and our limited time we prefer internal flights where possible instead of trains but an overnight train may be an option with him.

Thanks heaps for any advice you can give.

Yunnan is much much warmer than Xi'an and Yangtze River cruise. If weather really is an issue, Yunnan and the rest of Southwest China (Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan) are much better options - the temperatures are very similar to what you'd get in HK.

If you haven't been to Yangshuo/Guilin - I'd pick that. Super easy flight from HK. Lots of things to see for the kid. Bike riding. Lots of english speakers incase travel in China becomes exhausting.

I would suggest abandon the cruise. YunNan is good place to go. If you don't head to the very north part of YunNan, the weather is quite nice. KunMing's highest temp is 24C these days with sun shine every day. YunNan has lots to see which would ask for longer time.

I would also recommend Yunan since the weather is not so cold as in other parts of China and is mild all around year. If not been there, it's really worthwhile this time. Yunnan has touristy nice cities like Old Dali and Old Lijiang and as touristy places, it won't be too demanding either for you or for the child. Architecture is nice there and these cities are good places to witness minorities' dancing and traditions as well.
Yangshuo, though not in Yunan, is another highlight of China and the city is very nice, full of cafes and restaurants. The countryside is very beautiful and worths a visit.
