Yunnan is much much warmer than Xi'an and Yangtze River cruise. If weather really is an issue, Yunnan and the rest of Southwest China (Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan) are much better options - the temperatures are very similar to what you'd get in HK.

I would also recommend Yunan since the weather is not so cold as in other parts of China and is mild all around year. If not been there, it's really worthwhile this time. Yunnan has touristy nice cities like Old Dali and Old Lijiang and as touristy places, it won't be too demanding either for you or for the child.
