Wulingyuan or Yangshuo?

The more posts I read about Guilin and Yangshuo, the more it sounds like an amusement park (Epcot's China?). I'm not particularly thrilled of the idea of visiting an area so filled with Western tourists unless the scenery is unique. I noticed that many of the same descriptions in the LP guide of Yangshuo were in the description of Wulingyuan and wondered if it is coincidence. I would like to spend the middle 4 nights of my trip kicking back a little and just taking short relaxing hikes or bike rides. Would Wulingyuan be as good a place to do this? Wulingyuan is closer to my previous location than Yangshuo and I don't want to do more travelling than necessary.

Also, I got everyone in my group excited to take a cooking class in Yangshuo, described in an earlier post. Does anyone know of anything similar in Wulingyuan, unfortunately it must be conducted in English? Any other special sort of side activity like English-language ping-pong tutorial, etc, that you might recommend to teenagers or adults in Beijing, Xi'an, or around Zhengzhou

Is Wulingyuan the same place as Zhangjiajie? If so then Yangshuo and and Wulingyaun are completely different, both in scenery and in chances to find a cooking class in english. Both have fantastic scenery. Some comparisons for you:

Scenery: both excellent
Cost: Wulingyuan is much much MUCH more expensive
Bike rides: Yangshuo is really the only place; there are just too many hills, steps and cliffs in Wulingyuan
Hikes: both good, possibly better in Wulingyuan because its slightly more compact; in Yangshuo biking (or local bus) is the best way
Cooking classes: Yangshuo (you've got as much chance of finding english language cooking classes in Wulingyuan as you have of finding them in Zhengzhou, ie. none)
Place to "kick back a little": Yangshuo, but stay away from West Street as much as you can (thats where you're cooking class is likely to be though) and also the surrounding villages such as XingPing, etc that are reachable by local bus from Yangshuo.

you go to Yangshuo for the Scenery.

from Guilin you have the Hotsprings out of Longsheng, very steep mountainside, crystal clear rivers. In the other direction you have the Long Ji

Rice Terraces.

If you avoid Xi Jie then you avoid most of the western tourists (and run into eastern tourists).

English cookery classes at Wulingyuan sounds VERY VERY unlikely. These kind of things tend to be more prevalent where there's a market for them eg Western travellers, or expats.
Try Chinese Culture Club for courses in Beijing, and Shuyuan IYH in Xi'an for dumpling-making fun.

ellyse, not English cookery classes in Yangshuo but cookery classes in English.

There are two in Yangshuo and Pam's is the best. it takes half a day or a day, and you learn quite a few Chinese dishes, and it is all delivered in English.

Look, OP, whoever you, go to Yangshuo. Everyone else, save it for now.
You say biking? Days of biking around Yangsuo, maybe years. You don't want western tourists? Well, you won't see many now, maybe about 1 for every 250 Chinese tourists. IN fact, I'll bet you'll be craving a westerner here and there to share your exciting Yangshuo experiences. I am going to Zhangjiajie tomorrow and I can't wait, but the scenery AROUND Yangshuo has got to be some of the most magical in the world, and most of the time you have it ALL to yourself. It is NOT an amusment park.
