Any good beaches in Hong Kong?

Am heading to Hong Kong with a friend for 17 days in july. As well as sight seeing around hong kong we thought we might head up into China, possibly Chengdu for a few days and would also like to spend a few days relaxing on a beach. Can anyone recommend a good beach place and any other possibe places outwith HK we should visit? From what i've read so far about hong kong can't find any obvious good beach choice so is it necessary to go elsewhere?

Yes there are good beaches in HK. Not as good as in Thailand, but not bad at all.

See HK Gov beaches

And HK Outdoors

Best beaches are in Sai Kung, Lamma island and Lantau island.

And if you know of a way of getting hold of a boat, the ones off Sek Kong are wonderful ... used to spend the weekends on a boat moored off a couple of remote beaches!

Not Sek Kong (that is inland) but Sai Kung. You can get sampans out to nearby islands.

The two Tai Long Wans or Big Wave Bays - one in Sai Kung and one on HK Island - are well worth visiting.

Would there be any nice hotels or places to stay in at these beaches?

there are four tai long bays in hong kong. the one in Sai Kung does not have life guards (non gazzetted beach) and really has big wave. Many ppl go there surfing.
