Mongolia in the winter

I am currently travelling through Asia, in China at the moment, and my plan was to head to Mongolia in about a weeks time. However the more and more I read about Mongolia it sounds as though I have picked the worst possible time to visit! Im wondering if it a still worth going to at this time of year. (Note: I do have to leave china next week as my first 30 day entry visa runs out). If yes, what are the best things to get up to in the winter? Will I be able to go on a horse/camel trek? Will all the beautiful scenery be covered in clouds/fog? Will alot of the country be inaccesible? I have considered putting it off til the middle of the year ...but then i could be miles away - im so close now. Any words of support or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Check Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com) for current and historical weather data. It might give you a good idea of how cold it is there now, and how cold it's likely to be. Good luck

Depends on how much time you will spend here whether it is worth coming up from China or not. If you only have time for a few days in UB then don't bother but if you've a week or two then come on up.

Sure it's currently -15 to -20 deg C in the morning in UB but it's not too bad in the sun in the afternoon. Winter can be some of the clearer weather so the scenery is still usually good. Better than spring when dust is fairly common due to higher winds. Search the branch and you'll find lots of posts from people who visited in the winter and had a good time. If you've the coat for waling around Beijing or Northern China in the winter then it will be good enough for most of Mongolia at the moment.
