Expensive agency quotes for Mt. Kailash tours

Hi, want to travel to the west of tibet in May. Because of time restrictions I need to travel west soon after I arrive in Lhasa. To do this I have been looking at booking a tour online before I arrive BUT the prices I have been quoted are around $1500 per person for a 22 day trip. The lonely planet guide would suggest $800-900 is more reasonable.

Will it be cheaper to book in Lhasa and more importantly, will I be able to organise a tour within a week of arriving AND find people to fill a landcruiser? It sounds from the forum like many people are interested in Kailash so hopefully lots of people will be looking for a similar thing when I arrive. Is anyone interested in joining a group mid May time?

Chris.

Most of the places that allow you to book a trip to Kailash on line are going to be way overpriced. If you book it in Lhasa it will be much cheaper. Make sure that you negotiate on prices in Lhasa. Don't take the first price they offer you.

May isn't the start of the real busy season in Lhasa so you may have a bit of trouble finding people to fill the land cruiser (but not impossible). I would recommend posting messages at all of the main guesthouses and hotels in Lhasa in order to find others to go with you.

The price #2 listed was a very typical price for a Kailash tour in 2005, however prices since the train began have went up. I wouldn't be suprised if it costs 10 to 15% more now.

Thanks for your info thediscotiger. I had previously thought of only going via EBC but your itinerary looks very interesting as well. I will start looking into trips such as that as well.
Cheers!
