Another question...

If I have 2 passports is it possible to get a regular Chinese visa on one, a group Tibet visa on the other and then enter China on the group and leave on the regular visa? Has anyone tried something like this???

You mean two passports from two different countries? I guess I don't understand the logistics of it, but would you be outside China when getting both visas? Is it actually a Tibet visa or a travel permit?
If you are outside China, and have two passports and wish to use one or the other to enter China yes you could enter China with one, leave China, get a new visa in the other and re-enter.

You would not be able to use one to enter China and use the other to leave, even if you had visas in both.

I assume you cannot get a tibet travel permit without first proving you have a Chinese visa? Meaning you would need to give them the same identification...

I agree with both #2 and #3.

in addition, before you are given a Chinese Visa (group or any) your previous Chinese visa will be cancelled, even if valid. you cannot have two valid Chinese visas. Unless you hide the fact that you have one, which will be very risky strategy... computers are everywhere these days.
there are no Tibet visas, Tibet (TAR) is part of China. there are Alien Travel Permits issued by Tibet Tourist Bureau.

I disagree with #4, I doubt they'd notice. They're not that systematic about things yet.
I don't know about this specific situation, but I do agree with the above that it probably won't work. I'm assuming that you want to enter the TAR from Nepal, in which case you'd be stuck with a 21 day group visa, and that you want to move on from the TAR to the rest of China independently and spend more time in the rest of China without going through the hassle of changing to a longer-term individual visa. The problem is that even though they won't notice your first Chinese visa when you apply for your group visa and Tibet permit in Nepal, you will only get your group visa cancelled on the border. When you leave the TAR they won't check your visa or permit, but when you try to leave China and show them the other passport they will likely notice that the visa in your passport wasn't cancelled and that there's no stamp saying what date you entered the PRC on. That might be a problem.
If you are not entering from Nepal all of this doesn't matter. Read #74 on the FAQ to see why.

hmmm.. good point. my other passport with the normal visa won't be stamped when i entered into china.. i guess i am trying to work my way around the whole TAR requirements given i have both an australian and a british passport. i'm assuming they won't know i have two passports, but what happens when you enter from tibet into china? what do you need to show? couldn't i enter from nepal into tibet on my british passport with a group permit, and then enter from tibet into china with a normal chinese visa on my australian passport?

Tibet is part of China so why should you show anything??

#6- Leaving from the TAR into other areas of China is just like crossing a provincial border in any country. Nothing is checked, and your first Chinese visa will already have been cancelled while the second will just sit in your other passport and be useless.
Entering the TAR from other areas of China requires getting a permit, which is explained in as much detail as you could possibly desire in #74 in the FAQ. Basically you need to show your passport and your visa and pay some money to a travel agent who will get you a permit to enter the TAR. Once you are in the TAR no one will care how you got there, and the cops would only want to check your passport if you are leaving China or trying to get an extension.
