Question about China tourism visa

It is still a requirement that to get a tourist visa for China, I must receive an invitation from a hotel or a tourism company? And if so, do they fill out the visa application and then forward on to you, the backpacker, to sign and take to the local embassy?

What do we do if we are travelling China independently, without a tour?

Thanks!

Go up to the top of this page and read the faq section. You will find your answer, or at least a clearer idea of what you still need to ask. Of course you can travel on your own without a tour. What city in usa do you live in? there might be a consulate or DC embassy nearby.

I don't recall that ever having been a requirement - and I've been traveling to China since 1984.

Go to a Chinese consulate/embassy or have an agency do it for you and get a visa. We're well beyond the days of FECs and dual tiered pricing.

You get the visa on your own, and you don't need a tour.

1) No.
2) Not relevant since the answer to the 1st question is No.
3) Get it on your own from the nearest Chinese embassy/consulate. Failing which use a visa service.
Cheers!
