Extending a tourist visa

I have a 60 day tourist visa issued on an Australian passport, but as I'm travelling overland from Beijing to Kyrgyztan I would like 90 days.
Advice seems to be that I can extend this at a police station in Urumqi or Kashgar, but as the dates of my Kyrg visa will depend on this extension, I'm in a black hole if I can't get the extension.

Does anyone have recent experience/knowledge of any of the following??

1. Extending an L visa somewhere in Western China

2. Getting an extension in Beijing before leaving?

Do I need to wait till my visa is almost out before getting an extension (one post on this site indicates that the 30 day extension starts to run down from the day you get it - ie if you have 10 days left and get a 30 day extension, then you effectively have 20 days added on to your original visa.)

I have checked some Beijing based visa agencies online, they seem to specialise in changing types of visas, rather than simple (ok, no such thing) extensions.

That's right. You have 30 days from the date of extension, so going early cuts out days.

Extension practises differ from PSB to PSB. Some will extent from the end of your visa, some from the day of application. Get an extension at the last day of your visa. It will be ok for a first or second extension.
