Beware of Medical Tourism in Thailand
Beware of Medical Tourism in Thailand1

As an American, I have been scared, mutilated, and disfigured by offshore plastic surgery in Thailand.

OP - there is only one way this sort of malpractice will ever be adressed, and that is if it is brought to the attention of the public on a wide scale. Agitate like crazy. lf they won't listen to reason and a decent lawyer, then get the media involved. threats of an expose by a well known tabloid TV program such as 60 minutes, might work more wonders, than consulates and embassies. They are often more attuned to local sensibilities and not wanting to upset their own apple cart, than in looking after the rights and interests of their own citizens.4
you should have known one of the reasons medical services in the united states is expensive is because of malpractive law suits. the doctors are accountable and will have to pay up when taken to court. a major part of their expenses is to pay a malpractive insurance. did you expect the same accountability from a thai doctor when you paid 1/10 of the price as in the US?5
i do feel sorry for you. terrible experience to go through. all kinds of surgery is not without its associated risks, but in retrospect, when you have no recourse, then the risks should really outweigh the other considerations; however i do understand that you felt confident enough with the research that you conducted to go ahead despite the element of risk involved. good luck with your attempts to make this surgeon accountable. i suspect it will be very difficult for you to get very far through any legal channels so perhaps #3's suggestion about bringing negative publicity to this guy and the hospital would be a good way to illicit a response and to also provide a warning to others. good luck in your quest.if you can't be good - be good at it!

You may want to have a look at Thailand's new Consumer Protection law which makes it easier for victims of medical malpractice to file legal actions against doctors and health service providers in Thailand. Apparently many doctors are worried about it. There is also an article just posted on the Internet that looks at medical tourism from a legal perspective: Medical Tourism Thailand7
Actually, I have had two plastic surgery procedures in thailand and they were excellent!!!! Took a lot better care of me than the in the US. In the US, it is normal to discharge a patient and send them home same day as the surgery. Not in Thailand.Posted By: VenessaP -- 28-Jan-2010 15:01
