Chinese visa and visa extension

I'm planning on getting a Chinese visa (UK passort) and my friend also (US passport) at Tashkent (Uzbekistan capital).

We intend to enter China via the Irkeshtam Pass and travel the 2884km by bicycle to Lhasa. I have confidence we can get a 2 month visa in Tashkent.

The Trailblazer Overland Guide states that it is difficult to get an extension especially in Lhasa. Our most optimistic mileage would see us cover 100km a day which could in theory could get us all the way to Zhongdian in North Yunnan (if we get 2 month visa's) where I'm told we can definately re-new our visa's.

However can anyone tell me if we can get an extension anywhere between Kashgar and Lhasa, or indeed where is the closest town east of Lhasa.

Many thanks your help could save a lot of headache.
