Yangtzee River cruise.

We will be in China approximately four weeks in May - could I have anyone's opinion on the Yangtzee River cruise. Is it worth doing? and, from your experience, how is the best way to do it - which company, etc., etc.

Thanks.
Sherry

My opinion? I think it's the worst way to spend 3 days in China.

Not everyone agrees with me.

If you have the money to splurge on one of those Western boats, then you might consider the possibility.
If not, only go if a) you're absolutely set on it and would love it no matter how bad the actual trip might be, or b) you don't have anywhere else you would prefer to go in China (which is really unlikely!)

I strongly disagree! It was one of the best trips I did in china, however i went all out on this trip, I did an all inclusive 5 star 7 day cruise. It seems expensive at first, but once you realize it includes all meals, drinks, accomdations and excursions for 6 or 7 days you see its truly worth the money. if you would like more info, please contact me!

Out of interest, what was there to see in 7 days? Staying on a luxury boat anywhere in the World is probably memorable, are you sure it wasnt the boat rather than the trip itself? If so, why not head for the carribbean!

Yes, it is worth doing it.

Ask your hostel/guesthouse manager for advice on which trip or boat to catch. Advice cost money and be prepared with a few more RMB to get mch more enjoyment out of a 3D3N trip.

IF you find yourself the only backpacker on board you will be miserable, lonely and hate every minute of the trip like some of the psoters above.

Best of luck.

We had plenty of foreigners on our boat, still doesnt stop the fact that the scenery is average and the conditions on the standard Chinese boats suck. Most backpackers cant afford cruise liners and wouldn't want to spend time with rich old people who can? I know thats a stereotype, i know not all people on these boats are boring, upper class people, but many.....

My reason for being miserable had nothing to do with the boat or being the only backpacker on board - nothing at all to do with the boat or the conditions.

IT IS BECAUSE THE JOURNEY SUCKS.

Excuse me #7, but I must agree with #8 and #9. And also to correct you, there was only 1 possibility for cruise boats on the date that we wanted to go, so we couldn't have "shopped around" for a better itinerary or boat.
Cheers!
