Mt Koya in February

Hello All,

I will be in Kyoto in early February and have read quite a bit about visiting Mt Koya. How long is the journey from Kyoto to Koyasan ? Is it advisable to go in terms of weather ? Any hints or suggestions for lodging would be greatly appreciated.

Should take about an hour and a half depending.... Feb is good as there are few tourists and if lucky will have snow which lends a certain ambience. Try googlin' for temple accomodation. Starts around 9000yen. Veg breakfast included with early wake-up.

Can highly recommend Rengejo-in as a great place to stay. They speak some English there and have really nice communal baths. Whichever shukubo you stay in it will be BLOODY cold.

As I can remember it was definately longer than 1 1/2 hrs from Kyoto to Mt Koya more like 3 hrs.

Because a stay in a temple was just too expensive for me I stayed in the Koyasan YH, a very nice hostel Japanese style and very nice owners (also delicious food).

I have heard different accounts of the travel time as well. I'll be sure to stay at least 2 nights to accommodate for any travel delays.

I did the trip to Koya-san to Osaka, and it was about 45 minutes. You might have some problem with connection times, but that should not add more than 15-30 minutes onto your trip. But I can't imagine a trip from Kyoto to Koya-san taking more than 2 hours.

I've made my accommodations at Rengejo-in. It is farther from the cemetery than I'd ideally like, but it was recommended here and by the person I spoke to on the phone when I rang Koyasan. I'm most excited.

jakemathai, you'll love rengejo-in, I've been there about 8 times. In the evening after dinner take a stroll to the Garan and see the fundamental tower, gonpondaito, lit up at night. It is beautiful and never anyone else there. After walking through the cemetery in the morning I like to stroll back to the town, have lunch, then head up to the daimon, large gate. From there there is a lovely walk over a couple of hills, past nyonindo, and back to the shukubo. Takes about 45 minutes. Great views if the weather is clear, which ot probably will be at that time of year.

I'm looking for a temple stay... and recomendations. Price is not really a worry, wouldnt like to pay massive amounts of money, but wont skimp for the experience either.

Don't cry because its over, Smile because it happened.
