Alice and Uluru

Going to Australia in November and I want to go and see the'rock'. Is it best to stay in Alice and travel from there, or to fly into Ayer's rock resort? How long should I allow for my visit? Thanks!

If I remember correctly it took us about a day to drive from Alice to Uluru. If your stuck for time I would just fly there. An over night should be enough to see it. The sunset and the sun rise are spectacular and there is a good interpretive centre there. However I think Kings Canyon is around there also and thats worth a look (sorry if i'm wrong about that)....Its beautiful but very, very touristy.

I didn't climb Uluru... but I guess you would need longer if you wanted to do that.

We went first to Uluru - you get to see it really well from the air and most hire cars are taken Alice - Uluru so you get a better deal going the other way. BTW you don't need a 4wd (price of petrol and renting) and the roads are smooth. Rent car cos. don't want you going on dirt.

First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is.

I would base yourself in Alice, and either rent a car or join a 2 or 3 day tour. The Olgas and Kings Canyon are as interesting, if not more.
I stayed at Annie's Place in Alice which is a great hostel andhas a travellers cafe attached, plus they run tours too.

Hope this helps!

If Uluru is your only goal then I agree that an overnight is sufficient but if you have the time then go for Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta as well. The drive from Alice is quite long so if it's Uluru only then fly there.

It is better to fly into Alice Aprings as most tours originate from Alice Springs and there is a wider choice of accommodations and restaurants.

My Red Centre trip took 8 days i.e.
Day 1, arrive and settle in, walk around town.
Day 2 - 6 do a 5day4night* tour of the Red Centre. See The Uluru, Olgas, Kings Canyon, Hermansburgh, Mereene(sp) Loop, Glen Helen, Palm Valley, etc..
Day 7, one more day in Alice to see surrounds - walk the Todd River to the Telegraph Station, climb a few Hills and see the Museums.
Day 8, leave Alice.

* Since you travel all the way to the Centre of Australia, might as well spend a few more days there.

Good luck.
