Can I just say that maybe the Lonely Planet description of the safety in Cuba should be reviewed. My camera was snatched just a couple of hours after arriving in Havana. I had been lulled into a false sense of security after coming from Colombia.

The information in my Lonely Planet guide about Cuba being a safe place and attacks being extremely rare was misleading. I was dragged down the street before the strap on my camera broke and the two guys ran off with my camera. This was in the evening but in a fairly busy and well lit street.

At the police station the next day, we met up with a victim of a very savage mugging. He had been cut up with a knife, they took his wallet, his shirt (possibly to get at any money melt he might be carrying) and his shoes. We had to go to the hospital after that, for me to get my grazes seen to and for him to get his hands stitched.

I think Cuba is as dangerous as any other country and the " violent attacks are extremely rare" description in the Lonely Planet guide should be upgraded something more realistic.

What is the basis of the "extremely rare" rating? Official figures?

I'm sad to say that I agree. Gone are the days with a cop on every corner in Centro. Many many more tales of assaults than there used to be. It seems to get worse every year that I go! So sad!

The CUC exchange rate was changed in March 2011 so that it returned to par with the USD - 1 CUC = 1 USD. Of course, exchanging still involves commission and, in the case of the USD, the 10% penalty.

Hiya, noticed you're recommending Cuba-Junky here in the FAQs. I tried to use them and thought the website looked very amateur and quite untrustworthy...used it all the same but got no reply from any casa for a few days. Ended up using another website I found called Cuba Casa, which allowed me to book straight away, I got a confirmation email, and there were no problems when I got to Cuba... which I was happy with as I'd read so many horror stories on the LP's travel forum.
Thought you might be interested! Here's the link to the Cuba Casa people I used: http://www.cubacasa.co.uk/

I am reading and from time to time participating in this branch... Despite all the efforts to make this branch politics free, this issue remains actual because the responsible people of this forum, which are US citizens are still infected in high doses by political indoctrination by their government...

I am so sorry to hear that, but this is the reality. If the responsible people of this branch want to make it politics issues free, they would not allow the threads such as the newest ones concerning the drought or similar...

Dear moderators, please, let your minds become free from the stands of your government because they are just a small portion of attitude toward Cuba, in contrast to the whole World...

I wish to all of the Cuban visitors their best time in their lives as I have enjoyed there despite the annoying US government "mumbo jumbo" rhetorics.

All the best...
