Cycling Buddy - Cycle Tour Latin/South America

I am planning touring South America by bicycle.

I don’t cycle as much as I like, my job has taken over and I am cycling less and less each year. I started a cycling club about 5 years ago ‘The Casual Cyclists’ and we meet every Tuesday night, a mixture of bicycles from a folding bike to carbon road bike. The most riders we had one evening was 13, normally the average is 5 riders and I have only met 3 times this year and also missed out on other rides and Sunday meet’s. So I am looking at taking time out, get my fitness back and see the world.

I am looking for someone to join me in this adventure, non cyclists welcome and have a interest in Latin America, sightseeing/touring.

The plan: To learn (if not already know how to) build/maintain our own bicycles.
Sourcing bikes, the parts, luggage and building up our bikes, with the practical benefit of helping understand the bikes inside and out, and be prepared for any potential mechanical breakdowns while out on tour. I am a bicycle mechanic see http://www.cycletechuk.com/2008/03/mobile-bicycle-repairs-high-wycombe.html There is more to touring bikes than one first thinks and cost! I can get very good discounts on some bikes and parts, I have tools, we can talk more about that and any other issues.

I would like to build up a reasonable level of fitness and tour Europe in the spring for around 3 months, taking in France, Spain including the pilgrim trail and where ever else we fancy and sorting out bike issues before heading to Latin America. I don’t have a time limit, I am happy to camp, lodge with families, stay in hostels, take bicycles on bus back of a lorry. The main thing is to experience the culture and enjoy the ride.
I would like to tour Pacific Cost of Mexico, tour Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Peru Bolivia.

I am 44 years old easygoing Male.
If interested please leave me a PM, I am 25 miles west of London or can chat on Skype. I will give you my username in a reply message.

Martin,

I'm currently at the beginning of a tour from the middle US to Argentina.

I'll be crossing the border to Mexico (Baja) in early January, spending a lot of time there, then heading through central America. Then a boat to South America, etc.

I'm interested to hear more about what you'd like to do and when, and would be happy to meet anywhere you can.

Hello there,

I am very interested in the possibility of joining this trip. I love to bicycle. I have never done such a long trip. I do a 300 mile trip every summer, but it is supported by mechanics and other great people (MS TRAM in Minnesota). I am young ( 20) and stay in pretty good shape though. I really love to travel and there is actually a community in Peru I am considering joining for a while. I would not be able to leave til around August-September of this year. Let me know if this strikes your curiosity and we can talk more.

Sincerely,
Robert

Hi Coracaovagabondo & Robert, thank you for your reply's.

Ideally I am going to tour parts of Europe early spring, for fitness and then back to UK for a short while to earn a bit of extra money and to get my new touring bike ready for about September. To be ready to start my tour in Mexico! It would be great to meet you guys.
My travel plan in Latin America is just soak up the atmosphere, stay with local family's and even some volunteer/ Eco project work. I may skip Central America and go from Mexico/Guatemala To Colombia!!!
You can keep up with my plans on my Blog and hopefully meetup somewhere. If you have a Blog Please send me your link and I will be able to follow you and see what bike you are riding!

Happy Days Martin

Hi Harry
Good to hear from you, I am traveling to Europe in March - May. Visit my cousin in France, for cycling and cycle the way of St James Northern Spain 'El Camino de Santiago' pilgrimage route. Then back to the UK to arrange bike and travel to Latin America for September/October. If these dates work in with what you are interested doing or starting to think doing!
