How long are my shoe laces?

So I want to buy a spare set of laces for my hiking boots and day hikers. But I have no idea how long the laces are. Short of removing one of the laces currently in the boot and measuring it with my tape measure, is there a way to determine how long the replacement laces I need to buy should be? Is there some sort of formula that says "if there are 6 eyelets than you need a 58" lace?"

Thanks for all your help.

There is no such thing as a stupid question, there are just stupid people asking them.

Just take the shoelace out of the shoe and measure it. It will save everyone's time.

An estimate can be good enough.

1. Focus on one shoe lace and count the number of criss-crosses
2. For easier estimation, adjust your shoe so the length of the lace between one eyelet and the next is exactly one inch
3. Multiply 1 and 2
4. Finally, measure the distance from the last eyelet to the lace tip.

Adding 3 and 4 should give you a pretty good estimation.

Probably stating the obvious, but in step 4, the implication is that you should measure the distance between the last eyelet and the lace tip on BOTH ends. :)

Personally, I would do exactly as Julie suggested, even though a quick estimation would work as well. I am, however, absolutely amazed that someone built a FIVE-COLORED SPREADSHEET for this! I wonder if that person measures shoelaces for a living?

Amazing, isn't it!!!!! I'd never even considered a career in the lucrative shoelace measuring industry.

I feel your pain #1.....I'd rather spend a week designing a five-coloured spreadsheet than have to remove and measure my laces.

Why don't you email the manufacturers, or phone a shop and ask. Or remove and measure them in the shoelace shop, then you can put the new ones straight on your boots. Is there a chain of reputable shoelace stores in your area?

No way............I thought you guys were joking and I was being a fool for trying that URL.

Maybe it is GWes's website and this is his way of getting a subtle plug.

Ah yes, my secret plan to get everyone to look at my shoelace website is working!

Seriously though, I never even knew that there were other ways to tie your shoes. Wow, you learn something new everyday.

Remove BOTH laces, measure each one, add the two lengths and divide by two.

1) Find someone with similar shoes

2) Convince them of the amazing new method of shoelace tying found at http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/shoelacelengths.htm

3) When they remove their laces to try it out, surreptitiously measure them.

Now for the truly lazy.......you know who you are, the ones who don't even bother tying their laces but rather just slip in and out of their shoes (my prefered method). I fixed the links to save you that arduous task of copy and paste.

Buy the longest shoelaces available and cut them to length once they are in ya boots.

Or

But some elastic and then youll never have to worry about which way you should tie them.

Geez, now that I have input all the parameters in the spreadshet, I am having trouble finding shoelaces that are 46.57 inches long.

I would like to download this spreadsheet, but I'm afraid of viruses. Is this site safe? I'm imagining myself explaining to the tech people that I was downloading a shoelace-length calculator and it put a virus on my machine.
