Is San Francisco Safe?Hi everyone
I've been getting mixed messages about how safe San Francisco is for travellers. I am a single traveller, and would like to stay in a hostel, but I've been hearing thats a pretty dangerous idea...any imput? Are there any areas that I should stay away from?
Also, can anyone suggest which hostels are in safe areas?
Thanks in advance!

1As long as you use your common sense you should be fine. I would recommend staying at a hotel, if possible, more for security than anything else. SF is a safe place, and I lived there for several years as a single woman. The only place I recommend that you stay away from at night is the Tenderloin, or if you go, take a taxi, because, there are some great places there.

2Nah, it's dirty and disorganized and someone might try to sell you drugs, but it's not a particularly violent place. Cheap hotels are far more likely than hostels to put you in a questionable area (i.e., the Tenderloin, as mentioned, or nearby Civic Center after dark).
Safest hostel would be the HI at Ft. Mason (listed as Fisherman's Wharf). In an expensive residential/commerical area overlooking the bay and Golden Gate bridge, a few miles from downtown, within a few blocks of all the major public transit routes.
HI on Mason Street is probably fine; the Adeline is on the border of Union Square and the Tenderloin. Pacific Tradewinds is in a decent area downtown near Chinatown and the Financial District. Haven't stayed in any, so I can only report on the outside.
SOMA (South of Market Area) is where some clubs are, but iffier for walking around.

3you should be fine. as someone else pointed out, this is one of the safest cities in the US. the tenderloin is sketchy, but it's not unsafe to walk around alone during the day. stay away from hunters' point, but i'm not sure why you'd go down that way anyway. as awesome of a neighborhood as it is, the mission (especially mission street itself) can be a bit sketchy after dark, but i have walked to 16th street BART late at night with no problems.
you may want to consider the green tortise hostel on boradway. the neighborhood's pretty ideal -- near chinatown and northbeach, with easy links to MUNI. the hostel in ft. mason is in a nice area, but a bit out there.
have fun during your visit here! :)

4very safe. old ladies from des moines and such places might consider the homeless and transgender hookers as 'dangerous' but they're really harmless and rarely even a bother at all. as a single female traveler you may consider NOT staying in the tenderloin ( Ft Mason hostel is a great place). My female friends have reported a few instances of being harrased when walking htru the tenderloin at night (as hooker-cruising males circle the blocks). Mostly harmless, just an annoyance.

5I found San Francisco as safe as heavens though I also went to some bad looking areas.
The city has so many beautiful views and people thre are usually very nice and helpfull. Food is another great atraction ... I hardly found in the US so many good and tasteful meals as those I had in San Fran.
#6 ... Comic Alanis., Perhaps she was too impressed with the gigs in Brazil .... :-)

stayed last week in a private room at USA Hostels on 749 Taylor St (a few blocks from Union Square) and found that to be a decent and safe place. On my map, it seemed to be somewhere between the Tenderloin and Nob Hill, so we were a bit concerned before our arrival, but it turned out to be a good choice.

7Another area to be avoided is south of Market around 6th and 7th streets - not that there is much of a reason to go there anyway. It's got quite a few cheap, run down, residential motels and that type of thing. I've walked through during the day without any problem, but I wouldn't recommend walking through there after dark. There are areas south of Market around 3rd street that are perfectly fine.

10San Francisco is a beautiful city, very hectic and "bohemian". I've been there once, and I'll try to visit it again, as it's a great place in the US. Compared to Los Angles, it's a lot safer (at least I felt safer) and much much better. With New York, it's my favourite city in the States! You'll have a great time!!

11I visited their last summer and stayed on the edge of the Tenderloin area.
Found it quite disconcerting in the early night/evening time, not so much for the homeless but for the young lads who just seem to hang around for no reason. That said, the rest of the City is great and if you take the usual precautions, it's safe.
