15Skipping Ometepe would be a big mistake... especially if you're sacrificing it for time in Leon or San Juan del Sur. Even a couple of days in Granada is enough.
From the port to Santa Cruz is slow going because of narrow roads, stops, the detour to Altagracia, and the occasional speed bump. About an hour and a half.
A bus from Santa Cruz to El Ojo would take only 15 minutes or less. It's an easy bike ride as well. The road from Altagracia to Balgue is not a problem at all.
San Ramon is difficult to get to, but that shouldn't keep you away from Ometepe altogether.
The lake itself offers splendid views. Head to Playa Santo Domingo, walk out into the water, take a panoramic of the two volcanoes.
Ometepe is THE place for exploration.
