16@Rev-Traveller, I have no idea what the streetnames were called. It was app. 5 years ago that we were there. The hotel was in a streetname with Berry something. Now that I think of it, it could have been the name of the hotel too.
But maybe it was just a bad weekend or something, or maybe I would feel differently today... I have no idea why we did not feel comfortable. Just some sort of atmosphere or not a very nice vibe, especially around the end of day up till later. Like we had to watch our stuff really, really good. We just came in from Toronto and started in New York prior to that. We were very comfortable there and at ease. And after Montreal, in Quebec and later the state of Maine too.
We were there for 2,5 days after which we decided to move on. Sorry, can not make anymore of it. This was how all 4 of us felt and Montreal would not be at the top of my list of places I want to visit again someday.

17Having just spent the weekend in Montreal, it reminded me how much I love the city. Naturally, it saddens me to hear about your experience. I can only encourage you to try it again if ever nearby. If you stayed at Hotel Berri, it's not the most exciting location. The nearby park can be sketchy, for sure, but it's safe. Also, perhaps you never left the downtown/Latin Quarter area? I can't imagine you'd feel so uncomfortable in most other parts of Montreal. And, as I always say to others posting on this board, downtown is worth one day but it in no way gives one a sense of Montreal's uniqueness. Next time, regardless of the city you visit, I would recommend doing more research to find a better hotel location. Do try and visit again!!

19Hotel Berri, that was it indeed Ref_traveller. We were lucky to get a hotelroom in the first place. We were doing a roadtrip and we did not book anything in advance since we did not know how long we would stay at the places along the route. So we booked Hotel Berri the same day, a couple of hours before arrival at a visiting centre. However, there was a Formula 1/Grand Prix in that weekend. So almost everything was sold out.
Anyhow, I am sure I would not feel uncomfortable in the entire city. Of course I was only there for one weekend. I 've visited many places all over the world, some experiences were better than others. But that does not mean that maybe a next time I would actually enjoy Montreal very much. I visited Bangkok at least 10 times. I love that city, however, some visits were better than others...
So yes you are right, if one day I will be in the area again, I will visit Montreal a second time. And try another hotel too :)
