1512 days isn't long and it'll be bloody hot at that time in Rajasthan. Take a look at Ladakh imo. Better climate, awesome scenery and pleasant all around!
Concerning Rajasthan I'd say that you can safely bin Aǵra even if that is the #1 tourist attraction in India. My fave place in Rajasthan is Jaisalmer. It's the furthest, but well worth going--if you make it to Jodpur you might just as well go to Jaisalmer. Udaipur is nice too and i agree with Pirate_at_50 that Jaipur isn't all that.
Get a guidebook and a map and investigate.
A a general advice, don't try to see too many places--with 12 days you can realistically visit 3 or 4 places without rushing. And, as you mentioned Varanasi in you OP, forget about it--it's too far. Fantastic place but not worth going if you only have 12 days starting and ending in Delhi.

16Marc - you are missing the point, I feel, by not looking at this trip thru the eyes of the travller and her mum.
This will probably be the only time ever that Mum will go to India and the one place she'll want to see is the Taj Mahal - a truly magnificent, beautiful edifice rhat is regarded by the majority of observers as one of the Modern World's 7 wondewrs. I remember beinggiven a complicated jigsaw as a 10yo boy of the TM and it was the one place in the World I wanted to see - and when I saw it for the first time as a 36yo - I was blown away by its sheer beauty.
I am sure you have lots of escellent advice to passon , but thjat advice would be more useful if it met the needs of that particular traveller.

17Thank you Grahamapoole, I couldn't have said that better myself!
Marc, we know its a bad time weather wise and that their are better places to go at this time of year, but this is the only time in the foreseeable future that we can make this trip! We'll put up with the heat and stick to our plan so far. Flights are booked and we can't wait.

19Honestly I'd skip all the west(udaipur, jodhpur) and go straight from Agra to Varanasi by train. Varanasi is like no other city and when i arrived there is when it finally hit me that I was in India. I traveled for 2 months in India and my least favorite cities were jodphur and jaipur. They were all the same typical India, Go to Varanasi!! I have the best memories there.

20Fortunately, britt, she's unlikely to take your advice. It would seem that you didn't go to the places that you suggest that she not go to. And 12 days in Varanasi for a daughter and her mother may not, perhaps, be what they had in mind for their first Indian adventure.
Maybe on your second day here you'll be more helpful.
