2 Days in Tuscany by CarHi all,
I am currently planning a 2 day trip to Tuscany in June. Basically we arrive in Pisa on Thursday night and leave on Saturday evening (8pm) so that leaves us with a full day on Friday and most of the day Saturday to do some exploring. We will be staying in an agriturismo just outside Lucca and have rented a car. I have done some research and came up with the following itinerary:
Friday : Monecatini Terme
Borgo a Mozzano
Castelnuovo di Garfagnana
I would appreciate your thoughts on my choice of towns and whether there are any other towns on my route which are worth visiting. I have already visited Florence in the past and I would not like to spend my trip pushing my way through crowds on tourists. My aim is to have a relaxing, authentic holiday with my significant other.

1Friday - by the time you get to San Gim you'll be searching for somewhere to park the car. You're looking at a drive taking around a couple of hours, so to get there before the car park is packed and the tourist buses have dropped their hundreds of day trippers I'd suggest you consider being first in for breakfast and out of the hotel soon after 7 a.m. Personally think Montecatini is not overly special. If you're going to San Miniato you might like to call in at Vinci, just to say you've been, on your way back to Lucca though from memory there;s not much to see there. One alternative place to visit on the way to Montecatini is Collodi and Pinicchio's garden. OverallI think your itinerary for this day is optimistic.
Saturday - the Serchio valley up to Barga is well worth seeing but it is a good hour's drive without stopping. And as you'll need to be back at Pisa airport for 6 for an 8pm flight you won't have too much spare time.
Pity you've not left any time for Lucca - or have you been previously?

2I agree with 1 would forget Montecatini Terme it is really not that great, a lot of nice spa hotels, and good place to find prostitutes! Also head straight to San Gim in the morning than do San Miniato on your way back as above San Gime gets very busy from about 10.30 onwards.
You say you want a relaxing authentic holiday this does not sound that to me you are trying to see too much tone it down a bit, travel times can easily be double at weekends.

3Go see the Leaning Tower at night if you have time as soon as you arrive. Beautiful and less-crowded. Most travelers would probably agree that once you've seen it and the Piazza dei Miracoli, the is very little to hold your attention in Pisa that you would not also get in any other nice Italian town. I say blow out of Pisa on your first morning there, go to Lucca and spend the day and 2nd night there, then head to S.G. first thing on the second morning, trying to beat the aforementioned tourist hordes.
