16I was there just over 2 years ago. The nature is amazing, the people friendly, it felt safe (in terms of crime, although I hear Manila is not great), English is widely spoken, it's not very touristy. Overall one of my top destinations. The negative was the food, it was quite plain to me, like rice, egg and cooked chicken. Maybe you'll like it better. Many people try to cheat you too at the very touristy places, like Taal Volcano. Not as bad as in Indonesia, but still annoying. Once you leave the touristy area, I didn't see this tendency at all though. Sample prices I paid below, I'm sure you can find cheaper if you look for it.
Series of three minibuses from Manila airport to historic center: ~20 cent each
Private room with shared bath: $4
Full meal (soup+main): $1.80

17Hey, that's all good stuff. And, yes, the food thing will be something I'll try to deal with. After Thailand, everywhere else is going to be disappointing. You seem to have a good sense of reality.
I appreciate that quality. My plan is to avoid Manila if possible. I'm guessing that prices will be higher than 2-3 years ago. Food inflation seems to be hitting most countries to some degree. I'm just hoping that the dollar will hold up for a while at least. If I like it enough there, I might just flip-flop back and forth from Thailand to the Phils...you've been a good sport. Thanks.
