Guanajuato - fly into MEX or BJX?I am heading to Guanajuato to spend a few weeks studying Spanish. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding which airport to fly into?
This will be my first trip to Mexico and I'll be going alone. Is going through customs much different or easier in Guanajuato than Mexico City?
Flight to Mexico City are less expensive, so one option I am considering is flying into Mexico City airport there and staying in MExico City overnight at a hostel, then taking a bus to Guanajuato the next day. Of course, that entails getting to the city center from the airport, getting to the bus station in Mexico City, and then getting from the Guanajuato bus station to the city center. I figure it will be part of the adventure, but I'm not too into big cities.
From what I've read, a bus from Mexico City to Guanajuato would be about $35 US, but a taxi from the Leon/Guanajuato airport (BJX) to the Guanajuato city center would cost about the same. Is that right?

1Another option would be to fly into Mexico City and take the bus from the airport to Queretaro. The bus leaves at least once every hour, takes about 3 1/2 hours, costs about $20 US.
You can take another bus on from Queretaro to Guanajuato the same day (takes another 3 hours, about $15 US) or spend the night in Queretaro, a lovely city with many overnight and dinner options.
Taking the bus right from the Mexico City airport is very easy and saves the hassle of dealing with Mexico City on your first day.

2It really all depends on the cost differential on flights and the time you are likely to arrive in Mexico City (if it's really late then you will want to overnight somewhere). BJX to Guanajuato is about 40 minutes (one taxi ride), Mexico City to Guanajuato is about 5 hours (either 2 buses and a taxi if bussing direct from the airport or one taxi/one bus/one taxi if going from the bus station).

3If your costs staying over and in MEX and busing would add up to the cost of the flight to BJX why not fly there? If not and you save a bunch enjoy the experience of getting there from MEX. I would bus to Leon then take a bus fro the terminal to Gunajuato so you don't need to pay for a taxi. The Leoon terminal is very nice, and no big deal
As far as airports, yes, MEX is a large airport with lots of folks from all over the place going through. Lines are much longer and crowds can be much bigger, but it is manageable. It is not as confusing as some world airports like Paris. Then again BJX is much smaller and easy to navigate so it depends what you are comfortable with.

4BJX is much easier, its a small airport close to Guanajuato City.
But dep on what time you arrive in MEX, the bus to QRO is very convenient, just down from T1 International Arrivals. And then from The nice and easy Queretaro terminal you will have many options to get right to Guanajuato.
As you wrote, the overnight in Mexico City idea entails at least 2 cab rides plus your hotel cost, so savings might be eaten up.

10Not sure where you are flying from but Aero Mexico would be cheaper than "bussen" from MC from say San Francisco. I flew to Gudalajara than bused over to Guanajuato last year because I had a credit on Alaska that was about to expire. Total coat was more than my wife paid flying through MC on Aero. Add to that cost of staying in MC plus food etc it will be cheaper to fly to Leon/Guanajuato Airport.
PS They have a Collectivo from the airport to GTO. That will take you to your hotel but will make other stops.

12First time to Mexico....Definitely spend the extra money and fly to Leon. Less than one hour after landing you can be in Guanajuato. Mexico City is an amazing city and i love visiting, but you should have this be as easy at it can be....Mexico City is not easy. If you fly Leon, make sure you budget time on the way out to shop....it is the leather capital of the americas and you will never see so many shoe stores in one area....Have a great time in GTO. It is GORGEOUS!

13Stewbear (#10) : Please tell us more about the colectivo. I live in Gto but have never heard of it.
To the OP: About flying into BJX rather than Mex City or Guadalajara, if you can afford flying into BJX, for simplicity I too recommend it. Remember, you'll probably lose a day just acclimatizing to the altitude unless you're coming from somewhere like Denver.
One more thought: If you want to visit the museums or anything else in Mex City, you could buy an open jaw ticket, flying into BJX and out from MEX. The Metro from the North bus station in Mex City would involve a lot of steps and a transfer but now there's a trolley bus that will take you right to the historical center of the city and with a little work you could find an economical hotel near where it lets you off.
All this is probably more than you want to know . . . I must be I'm happy Thorntree is working again.
