Shanghai to Putao ShanI've searched Thorntree for Putao Shan info and have come up empty, the LP guidebook or at least my version is a bit vague and the internet presents conflicting information. So here is hoping you all can strighten things out.
What are your thoughts on the best way to get from Shanghai to Putao Shan.
My plane arrives at 16:00.
1. One website claims an overnight boat at 19:30. Does anyone know if this is accurate and if so is it possible to get from Shanghai aiport to the ferry dock in that amount of time?
2. Does anyone know about the boats that leave daily from shanghai to putao shan, where to find information on these and how to book?
3. Finally, I am thinking about going to Ningbo. The last two trains are17:43 and 20.00. Does anyone know if you need to buy a ticket in advancd for the Shanghai to Ningbo train or if I could get one same day?
Thanks in advance for any advice/information

1Yes, there is a night ferry from Shanghai Wusong Pier to Putao Shan daily.
The pier locates at 114, Song Pu Road, Baoshan District (Song Pu Road at Dongsheng Road).
Re 2012.12.05 info, it leaves at 20:00 and arriving at 07:30 daily.
An extra ferry leaves at 19:00 and arriving 07:00 Friday only.
Either PVG or Hongquio Airport, by public transportation need 3 hours+ connection time.
By taxi will less than an hour.

Alternately, by D-train/G-train from Hongquio to Ningbo at 17:43, 19:51 and 20.06

2Do not take the train to Ningbo. If you go to Shanghai south bus station in Shanghai (probably other bus stations too) you can take a direct bus to Shenjiamen Banshengdong Wharf (where the boats to Putuoshan depart from). I am not sure when the last bus is, probably around 7pm.
The bus takes 5 hours and goes via the Hangzhou cross-sea bridge

3I came across this, which looks promising and is what I think we will probably do:
We are asked frequently on how to transport from Shanghai to Putuoshan Mountain of Zhejiang Province by long distance bus. Well, let’s answer this question in details.
Firstly, you should go to Shanghai South Long Distance Bus Station located at No. 666, Shilong Road, Xuhui District to catch a bus for Putuo. The terminal station of Shanghai-Putuo bus called as Shenjiamen Bus Station.
Secondly, passenger can take a bus or a taxi from Shenjiamen Bus Station to Banshengdong Wharf (bus ticket price is RMB 2-3 Yuan and taxi fare is 10 Yuan).
Finally, purchase a ferry ticket (RMB 22 Yuan) and the fast ferry will take you from Banshengdong Wharf to Putuoshan Mountain directly.

6They're all a ripoff like the whole island. Better to take the ferries to Dongji Island from the same wharf

9I just returned from three days on Putuo Shan and I have to say that despite the commercialization, it was definitely a worhwhile trip and a place I would recomment, especially if you are living in China and are longing for fresh air and natural scenery, doubly so if you have any interest in Buddhism. If possible, I would recommend going mid-week. The main difficulty is getting there. We took a four and a half hour bus ride to SHenjiamen port from the SOuth SHanghai bus center, and when we got to the port, no ships were going because of the wind. We caught a taxi to a nearby port and it was only a ten minute or so ride. We were going to take the fast boat back to Shanghai but did not want to risk a cancelled ship and so took an overnight ferry. SInce we got a room for just two people, this was a bit expensive (also note, if you do get a room on an overnight ferry for two people, the only way they will guarantee that the two of you can be together is to pay an extra premiium of about 90 RMB (from 409 to 499). I think I would just take the bus back next time. In any case, I highly recommend a visit.
