Campervan in HawaiiHi All
I was wondering how user friendly it is to campervan around the Big Island, Hawaii. My wife and I will be be on the island for a week and think we will be able to see most of the sights as well as relax on the beaches during that time. Has anyone run into problems driving around in a campervan. We plan to stay at camp grounds as well as freedom camp. Is it safe?
thanks in advance

1Found this on hawaiistateparks.org:
Hawai'i's State Park campgrounds are not set up for camping in vehicles, including campers, vans and trailers. Sleeping in vehicles in our campground parking lots is therefore not allowed. The single exception to this rule is at Wai'anapanapa State Park on Maui, which has a small area designated for camper vans.

2Hawai'i is not camper friendly. Very few places where you can camp legally and they are not convenient or comfortable places.

3There are a very few nice campgrounds here - Namakani Pai'o at Volcanoes National Park is one I like. But remember that economic times are still pretty hard here, and there are a lot of houseless families camping in the beach parks. That can lead to some fun encounters - but more likely encounters that are unpleasant.
You absolutely can't expect to freedom camp here. The campervans that you can rent are expensive and many people have mechanical issues with them. You'd be much better off in a hotel or B&B - it will cost you less than your van rental and you'll be able to sleep at night!
