Travelling to Canada via Las Vegas
Hey all,I'm planning to fly to Canada later this year from Australia (via Las Vegas). The flight I am looking at would get into McCarran Airport just after 11pm, and the flight I am looking to catch from Vegas to Toronto leaves at 7:30am the next morning.
Is it possible to just hang out in the airport overnight, and wait for the flight that next morning, rather than having to go through customs and find a hotel and having to come back through the next morning? Does the airport allow that?
Any help/thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated :-)
cheers,
Sarah

When you land in Vegas, you must go through immigration and customs. There is no international transit in US airports. You can then either recheck your bags after customs if you have an onward ticket (assuming you checked them at your origination). At that point, you are now in the USA, so you can leave the airport and just hang out in Vegas or optionally stay at the airport. I think it's open all night, so shouldn't be a problem.Because you go through immigration in the US, don't forget to fill in the online ESTA.

You will be going through customs and immigration at your first point of entry into the US, presumably Los Angeles, (or Honolulu or Dallas?) so in Vegas you will be free to leave the airport or do whatever you want to do.3
I agree with Libby ... since there are no direct flights from Australia to Las Vegas, you will not be clearing customs and immigration there (and I guess it would be LAX). But of course you could be flying into Las Vegas internationally from somewhere else - Central America or somewhere - but you don't advise us if this is the case.Is it absolutely essential that you have these two ugly times? I think it's too short to bother going to a hotel of course, but also too short to even bother heading to The Strip in the middle of the night - nobody with honest intentions is on the street at that time. But to answer your question, Las Vegas is definitely a 24-hour airport - and there are even pokies (aka slot machines) everywhere, to help you pass the time. I'm sure you can find a bench somewhere to lie down.

I am also curious what the full itinerary is... That's not even a non-stop to Toronto is it? Via Vancouver? Anyway, yes, you can hang out at the airport if you want. I would want to head to the strip though. Walk through some of the casinos, people watching. I am not a big fan of Vegas, but if you've never been before, it's something you just have to do!! Due to jetlag, this will not be night to you anyway, so why sleep?? You can do that on the flight to Toronto.5
Yes ... a fair point if you have never been to Las Vegas previously. Not a long cab ride from the airport to The Strip. And to be honest - once you have seen the first big casino there, you really have seen 'em all.6
The Vegas Strip is so close to the Airport you could walk there... I have done it...Its about 2 miles maybe less...and there is a sidewalk all the way...
Of course a taxi would be quicker...
So...You could gamble for a few hours on the strip...or just enjoy the massive amount of Neon... Then take a taxi back to the airport for your flight...
Vegas has a very busy airport and lots of people hang out there all night for their fights... I'd get back to the airport by 5AM just to be sure about checking in...

Agree with everyone above that you should try to go to the strip and check it out on your layover. It's very close to the airport. Cab is less than $15. And things go on all night. It's great to see in the dark anyway with all the lights. However, if you really want to just hang out at the airport, read tips at the following site: http://www.sleepinginairports.net/usa/lasvegas.htm

Lots of non-stop Vegas-Toronto flights, Max. It's a big tourist destination for us Canadians!9

But not at 7.30am, I think. Her itinerary is mysterious.
