Russian tourist invitation, voucher and visa
I can't see the answer to this anywhere else so help much appreciated as I'm about to get a Russian tourist invitation letter and supporting documentation before applying for the visa itself. Most online invitation letter sites only offer 3 or 5 spaces to put the city and hotel I plan to stay in. Does this matter when I'll be staying in probably more than 11 places plus various nights on the train? Is it sufficient to have just the main 3 cities?
destinationrussia.com also offers the option of a detailed travel itinery document for $6 - is this necessary?
I believe for the visa itself I need to submit, amongst other things, a full itinery (is this what the above travel itinery document is for?) - how important is it to get this exactly right? At this point I know my general route but not exactly how long I'll stay in each place - I wont be booking anything in advance. Is it better to put more possilble stops than less?
How does the following very vague itinery sound (without regard to the exact days that the trains run)?
Night 1 to 4 - Ulan Ude
Night 4 and 5 Slyudyanka
Night 6 and 7 Oikhon Island
Night 8 and 9 Irkutsk
Night 10 train
Night 11 and 12 Tomsk
Night 13 train
Night 14 Yekaterinburg
Night 15 and 16 Perm
Night 17 train
Night 18 and 19 Nivhny Novgorod
Night 20 and 21 Vladimir
Night 22 to 25 Moscow
Night 26 train
Night 27 to 29 St Petersburg
What happens to me if I submit this itinery and then stay an extra night somewhere and maybe one night less somewhere else?
Will I need t register at every city I spend a night in?

Difficult to answer without knowing your nationality or where you intend on applying. I don't need to supply an itinerary document myself. Just a list of cities and hotels I would be staying in but no exact dates. You should be able to get at least 5 cities on your invitation, but these will not appear on the visa so it's not the end of the world if you miss a few off.
Registration is something that needs to be done by the people you stay with, you can't do this yourself. Hotels generally do this for free and within 24 hours, others tend not to unless you're with them more than 7 working days.

I'm Australian and applying in Sydney. I've heard that you can apply more than 90 days ahead of expected arrival date - do you know how far ahead? I'm trying to do it as early as possible as need my passport back to apply for other visas for the trip. Thanks for you answer above - it made me feel happier about the invitation letter. It seems that the idea is to get as many registrations as possible but not to worry if you don't get them after the first compulsary one.

Australians often report success applying even 4-6 months prior to departure because the consulate staff know how long it can take to get to Russia from there and the limitations of other visa which are not date specific. You might want to check what day you cross the border into and out of Russia as the visa isn't for nights but for days. Your itinerary should say how when and where you plan to enter and depart.
