Comfort food
So while you have been deprived of Get Stuffed, how have you been consoling yourself? Baileys Milos (hot chocolates) is one of my favourites although the season is currently a little warm for this. I had high hopes for apricots wrapped in bacon but they were a disappointment. Think I might try fresh ones next time.1
I spent New Year in Belgium.The home of comfort food.......and they need it with the weather they have there ;-)
Chips with mayonaise,chocolate everywhere,sausages from the Christmas Markets,waffles with chocolate sauce,beef stew and mashed potatoes........

Hip hip hurray! Now that GS is back we can feast again after that rather long enforced involuntary food fast up till now:))#2(FG)."Kichap manis"(especially ABC brand) is used by the Indonesians and some Singaporeans and Malaysians as a dark sweet/salty soy sauce for sauces and dips apart from marinades for all kinds of meat,poultry and seafood and even fried soy bean cake "tofu" and "tempe".
Usually in combination with diced shallots,garlic,tamarind paste/lime juice and fresh hot chilles.
Quite popular in stir fried noodles and vegetable dishes as well.

I use kecap manis (manis means sweet) in my marinade for grilled chicken. Orange juice, km, garlic, ginger.And I use it in a Korean spinach dish (the Koreans would use nonsweet soy sauce and sugar): Korean sesame oil (the Koreans toast the seeds before grinding; you can't substitute other sesame oil), toasted sesame seeds, and rice vinegar. Room temperature. you can do the same thng with grated cucumber.
I like it, but I think we established the context of gravad lax sauce that I am happy with more sweetness in a savory dish than you are.
I have been eating comfort food the last couple of days, as it happens. Split pea soup with country ham, cornbread, and then applesauce with excellent local cream.

Thanks tribolite and Vinny for inspiration.I used to use ketjap manis before but only for satay chicken which is a sweet-ish dish anyway.
This ketjap was on sale, and a few others. I also bought 'perusahan ketjap kudus'. Another name on the bottle is Kaki Tiga (brand name?). It's still unopened so I haven't tried it yet.

I've been over on Chowhound Home Cooking site since the closure, and enjoying reading their weekly What Are You Cooking threads. Lots of creative menus.I'm still in "clean out the freezer and pantry cupboards" mode, and making great progress. Lots of excellent ingredients, just needed some determination to find recipes and make the time to actually use what I have. Comfort foods - Beef stew served over egg noodles. Hamburger / sliced potatoes "hot dish". Ground ham, velveeta, noodles & white sauce bake.
And we're down to the last 2 dozen frozen Christmas Cookies.

I started marinating an arm steak in wine and lime juice in preparation to season and grill but then it got way too cold and windy so it's been sitting in my freezer. Now that GS is back I'm sure the weather will again cooperate and I'll be able to grill it this weekend. And it really is supposed to warm up this weekend. Thanks for the post, I almost forgot about it.13
Oooooooooohhhhhh Donkey! I don't know what's more comforting, the chocolate cake or the amaretto. Sounds yummy! We don't talk about food as comfort food in our house but we eat a good deal of comforting food. One of my favorites is a simple grilled cheese sandwich with soup (I have lentil my husband has tomato). Actually a full T-day turkey dinner is comfort food for me, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
