Last minute road trip. I have no idea what i am doing.
Hello everyone! So, i am a 25y/o that just happens to have lots of free days from the 5th to the 13th of february. I am thinking of flying into dallas from mexico city, renting a car and driving dallas-nashville-memphis and finishing in new orleans for mardi gras. Is this plausible? I also want to visit the Jack Daniel's distillery in Tennessee.
How much approximately you think i will spend? I can couchsurf here and there, and the rental car will be $120.00 so i have figured that out. I am looking for advice in regards to gas prices. In all honesty, i have no idea what i am doing and would very much appreciate your input :)
Also, is my mexican driver's license valid in the US or do i need an international one?
My interests are music, art, music and then music. Oh, and booze. But i will have to limit the booze since i am driving.
To finish, i would like to add that if anyone is thinking of doing the same trip on these dates, i am more than happy to travel with someone and split the costs :)
Muchas gracias!
-Mena

Is this plausible?
"Plausible," yes. But "plausible" is not necessarily "enjoyable."This trip will involve one full day behind the wheel of the car, and that's before you account for stops (food, restrooms, etc.).
This involves backtracking. (You pass through Memphis to get to Nashville, then return to Memphis.)
If you can, skip Dallas and fly straight to Memphis or Nashville.
Add a stop in either Tupelo or Clarksdale, depending on which is on your way.

- You only have 8 days. That's a lot to do in that time frame.
- Mardi gras is a good idea, but you need to see if you can still find somewhere to stay at this point. I wouldn't count on couchsurfing during this busy period, but if you're planning on it, try it now and see if you can confirm something. Everyone else has already been doing the same thing for months and I doubt there is a lot of availability left at this point anywhere close to NO.
- Why are you flying into Dallas? Fly to Nashville. Stay 2 days. Drive to Memphis, stay 2 days. Then go to New Orleans for the rest of the time (including driving).
- You don't really need a car in New Orleans. So I would only rent one for Nashville and Memphis. You can also avoid the one-way dropoff fee by only renting a car once you get to each city and dropping it off before you leave the city. You can take Greyhound between Memphis and Nashville. Then fly to New Orleans. (Check Kayak.com and Southwest.com for flights)
- You can use your Mexican driver's license. Make sure you understand that you may need to pay for car insurance if you don't have the appropriate liability coverage already. It's mandatory.

A week in February and you're in Mexico?Mexico is where this Neworker would go if I had a week in february.
Anyway your itinerary has 4 places in 8 days and a lot of driving. It's not crazy, but
- Dallas to Nashville is 9 hours.
- It's 3 hours to backtrack back to Memphis,
- Then 6 hours to New Orleans.
- Add 7 more hours if you want to return to Dallas by car.

Perhaps other area Mardi Gras celebrations will fit into your trip and still have places to stay.ADVERTISEMENT
