Hanoi overland to hong kong, need Chinese visa?

Hi guys,

Planning on spending a week in Hong Kong. We are travelling from Hanoi in Vietnam overland to Hong Kong. Do you need a visa to pass through the bottom section of China if you are going overland? Any ideas of the cost?

Any suggestions for buses/trains that do this journey and their cost?

Cheers:-)

Yes visas are needed for all land travel through China. You dont say what passports you'll be travelling on so cant give any idea of cost. Vietnam has always been difficult to get Chinese visas so you may have to enlist the help of a visa agency.

Yes need a visa. Hanoi can be hard - you might need to use an agency, and the agency might need to send it to HCMC - so could take a few days.

Once you have the visa, straightforward to get to Hong Kong. Bus ot train from Hanoi to Nanning. Then train to Guangzhou, and then another train direct to Hong Kong, or from Nanning you can catch a bus to Shenzhen, then walk across the border to Hong Kong and catch a commuter train to the downtown area. seat61.com has got details of times and costs.

Do you need a visa for overland travel in China if your feet don't touch the ground? ;-)))

For trains, the info in this web could be useful.

Without a visa, passport holder of Japan, Brunei, or Singapore is allowed to enter China, for duration of 15 days.

Check ELong and CTrips for flights, as the cost a Visa and the Train could be close to the flight, you never know.
