Please review the itinerary for my trip to the USA – summer 2013

I have made a tentative itinerary for my trip to the U.S. in summer 2013. It`s nice if you can see through it and see if it looks manageable?. I`m very grateful for all tips you guys can provide. I`ve already paid for the airplane tickets and the hotel in New York, therefore I have a fixed arrival in New York and a fixed departure from Boston

Some info about the trip and myself:
I will be traveling solo and I'm a male in the beginning of my thirties. I like to see the sights, nature and have no need to lie on the beach. When I travel alone, I'm generally not looking at the night clubs. I like to eat a quiet dinner and maybe have a beer or two in either the hotel bar or a cozy bar nearby. I`m still a little uncomfortable to eat especially dinner alone so prefer casual restaurants. My budget is quite free, but I try to save where I can. When I`m on a road trip motels is just fine, I like to stay in budget hotels in the major cities. I'm in reasonably good physical shape and I prioritize to stay at places that have either a private fitness studio or where the surrounding areas invites to running (Central Park is a good example)

My itinerary:
20/07/2013 New York (arrival afternoon, Ramada Eastside (booked and paid))
21/07/2013 New York
22/07/2013 New York
23/07/2013 New York
24/07/2013 New York - Los Angeles (Motel 6 Hollywood)
25/07/2013 Los Angeles
26/07/2013 Road trip starts in rental car. LA - to either Cambria, Big Sur or Monterey (Not sure where to stay)
27/07/2013 Cambria, Big Sur or Monterey - Yosemite (Yosemite Bug)
28/07/2013 Yosemite
29/07/2013 Yosemite - Lone Pine (through Tioga Pass) (BEST WESTERN PLUS Frontier Motel)
30/07/2013 Lone Pine - Las Vegas (road trip ends)
31/07/2013 Las Vegas
01/08/2013 Las Vegas (Grand Canyon?)
02/08/2013 Las Vegas - San Francisco
03/08/2013 San Francisco
04/08/2013 San Francisco
05/08/2013 San Francisco
06/08/2013 San Francisco - Boston
07/08/2013 Boston
08/08/2013 Boston
09/08/2013 Boston
10.08.2013 Boston - (departure 09.30 in the evening)

Some final comments and questions:
Yosemite
I've heard some different recommendations regarding if I should use my own rental car or use public transport to get into the valley. I intend to spend the whole day I have in Yosemite to visit various places in the valley.

Grand Canyon
I am very unsure of Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Original I planned to take a guided one-day trip to the GC, but I wonder if I should expand the road trip to also include a visit there. It will typically be 1 day to get to the GC, see the sunset. Stay nearby, watch the sunrise, and then travel back to LV in the afternoon. I can fix it by maybe take one day from Boston.

Thank you for reading. I`m very grateful for everybody that takes some time to answer.

I'd take your car early and skip L.A. altogether.
Spend the night of the 25th in San Luis Obispo. It's a Thursday night, so you can enjoy the Thursday night farmers market (part farmers market, part street festival). Then spend the next night in Monterey.

Then head to SF. It's silly to drive so close, then detour so far before coming back. [You route on a map||http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Los+Angeles,+CA&daddr=35.6149753,-121.1463448+to:Monterey,+CA+to:Yosemite+Valley,+CA+to:Lone+Pine,+CA+to:Las+Vegas,+NV+to:San+Francisco,+CA&hl=en&sll=36.297418,-117.487793&sspn=8.664234,16.907959&geocode=FYqYBwIdm77z-CkT2ifcXcfCgDH0CEYlb98v4g%3BFf9wHwIdGHTH-Ck52ZIAvTPtgDF9SgmaUmS-2Q%3BFa55LgId7Ai8-CmR-7VwUuSNgDFePUrYCUlI7g%3BFaLzPwIdfCXf-CmvY_I4_vGWgDFu4slULj8hGQ%3BFVyQLgId74D2-ClTBvITnC2-gDF4jwJgY2H4BA%3BFdYQJwIdMJoi-SnRffWkgre-gDGjebPV5tXMOg%3BFVJmQAIdKAe0-CkhAGkAbZqFgDH_rXbwZxNQSg&oq=san+f&mra=dpe&mrsp=1&sz=7&via=1&t=m&z=7] if you need a visual of what I'm referring.

Yosemite

There is a pretty good shuttle system, so for most places, you can park then ride the bus. For a few other places, and outside the valley, it would be best to drive.

Grand Canyon
Spend the night. Take a day from Vegas. It's the place that can most tolerate losing a day. (Vegas is better at night. Daytime gets boring fast.)

Thank you for your reply bzookaj. i`m strongly considering to skip LA altogether. I did not tell you that I`m planning to fly from LV to SF. I have heard that I do not need a car in SF and therefore I planned to do the SF city holiday towards the end of my trip. Here is my planned road trip:
https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=los+angeles&daddr=Big+Sur,+CA,+USA+to:monterey+to:Yosemite+Valley,+CA,+USA+to:Tioga+Pass,+Tioga+Pass+Rd,+CA,+United+States+to:Lone+Pine,+CA,+USA+to:Las+Vegas,+NV,+USA&hl=en&ll=36.004673,-118.547974&spn=4.314326,8.453979&sll=36.004673,-118.526001&sspn=4.314326,8.453979&geocode=FYqYBwIdm77z-CkT2ifcXcfCgDH0CEYlb98v4g%3BFVVxKQIdmFu9-ClVWKRN-4-NgDFi47fxx9elFg%3BFa55LgId7Ai8-CmR-7VwUuSNgDFePUrYCUlI7g%3BFaLzPwIdfCXf-CmvY_I4_vGWgDFu4slULj8hGQ%3BFah4QgIdg0Tk-CGWptapCcdpAil7El_jmFqWgDGWptapCcdpAg%3BFVyQLgId74D2-ClTBvITnC2-gDF4jwJgY2H4BA%3BFdYQJwIdMJoi-SnRffWkgre-gDGjebPV5tXMOg&oq=big+sur&t=h&mra=ls&z=8

Do you still think that I should spend the days in SF and pay for the rental car while I`m there? It might be the smart thing to do

For your trip, yes. It is (imo) just plain silly to practically drive to SF only to skip it and come back after hitting Vegas.
There are a few motels, like Cow Hollow Motor Inn on Lombard, which offer free parking, to keep costs down.

You could look into two rentals. These routes are popular enough that the one-way fees may be waived. If you can get two that are, then you can forgo the car for your few days in SF, saving money. You lose a bit of time having to deal with this, though (to drop off the first and pick up the second).

I'd add one more night to the coast drive on Highway 1 (if you have to do it in one day, Cambria is about halfway and much nicer than San Luis Obispo, farmers' market or not). Stay in Cambria and Monterey. Lots of nice stuff to see and do along the coast. Have a good trip.

Thank you bzookaj and 55vineyard for good tips and recommendations.

I`ve now reviewed my plan and I`m going to stay in San Francisco on my way to Yosemite. I`m also going to extend the road trip to also cover Grand Canyon.

What I really can`t decide is if I should skip Los Angeles all together and extend my drive up the coast by one day. I can also skip a day in Las Vegas and use it up the coast, but then I only have two nights in Vegas and I will arrive late both nights.
If I decide to skip LA do you guys have a nice little city/town to recommend that I stay the first night after arriving in LA? (maybe an hour drive or so, my plane arrives around 5PM)

I`m pasting in my revised itinerary:
20.07.2013 New York
21.07.2013 New York
22.07.2013 New York
23.07.2013 New York
24.07.2013 New York - Los Angeles
25.07.2013 Los Angeles
26.07.2013 Los Angeles - Cambria
27.07.2013 Monterey - San Francisco
28.07.2013 San Fransisco
29.07.2013 San Fransisco
30.07.2013 San Fransisco
31.07.2013 San Francisco - Yosemite
01.08.2013 Yosemite
02.08.2013 Yosemite - Lone Pine
03.08.2013 Lone Pine - Las Vegas
04.08.2013 Las Vegas - Grand Canyon
05.08.2013 Grand Canyon - Las Vegas
06.08.2013 Las Vegas
07.08.2013 Las Vegas - Boston
08.08.2013 Boston
09.08.2013 Boston
10.08.2013 Boston (departure in the evening)

It's really up to you. But I hesitate to suggest staying there when you are really only passing through, and the day could be better spent elsewhere.
Given your new itinerary, I would apply it to Yosemite, or take a trip to Zion and go to the north rim of the canyon rather than the south (to save driving). But that's just me.
And since it hasn't been said yet, book Yosemite lodging as early as you can. NOW is not too soon; summer fills up fast.

If I decide to skip LA do you guys have a nice little city/town to recommend that I stay the first night after arriving in LA?
Santa Barbara.
