A whole day in Abu Dhabi

Hi all,

I'm going to stay in Abu Dhabi from early morning to late night awating a new flight. This is very exiting having the possibilty to see a tiny bit of AD.

I have som questions if someone want to help?
  • Do you have to have a VISA to get out of the airport?
  • What is the main attraction?
  • Do I, as a foreigner girl have to cover up everything including hair?
  • One thing YOU think I should see!
  • Traditional meal?

I'm super exited!

Thanks!

Visa depends on nationality, depending on where you're from you can get a 30 day tourist visa stamped in your passport for free as your go through immigration (such as if on British passport), or you may need to apply in advance. Check here: http://www.mofa.gov.ae/mofa_english/portal/79e01fed-3501-4ebb-accd-9e27950433a7.aspx

Main attractions in Abu Dhabi include the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (for which you will need to be covered, including hair, otherwise generally conservative clothing is fine for AD, i.e. no mini skirts/hot pants/strappy tops). Visitor info here: http://www.szgmc.ae/en/

Other things to see and do include the Corniche in the city itself which is nice for a wander along, and to walk to the end and go inside Emirates Palace, which is in fact now a hotel, but impressive for a look inside. There is one of those Big Bus Tours in AD too which might be a good bet, and includes a stop at the Mosque and the other main sites. http://www.bigbustours.com/eng/abudhabi/custompage.aspx?id=maps

Hope that helps a bit - not sure about food recommendations, sorry!

I also did spend a day there a couple of years a go, but didnt reaaly have the choice of how the spend the time... However, we visited the above mentioned mosque which was impressive, it is newly built though so dont expect anything "historical"... We also saw some restaurants and malls, but nothing spectacular. The city itself was shiny, full of expensive cars and foreign labour...

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is well worth a visit, it's very beautiful.

You do not need to cover your hair when you're going around town, just in the mosque.
