Driving to New York City

This summer we are planning a road trip to New York City from eastern Canada. We would like to be able to park at a "budget friendly" hotel/motel/hostel outside of the city and use the subways to make our daily travelling around the city easier. Another alternative would be to park further outside the city leaving our car at a "park and ride" lot, and take the train into New York. Are there any good recommendations people might have for where to narrow my search down? I'm looking for anyone that has gone about visiting NYC in a similar manner or any information on seeing NYC like this. Thanks!

Hmm, I'm not an expert on this.

I know that the m/l convenient public transport from NYC runs north to around West Point somewhere. There's actually some good hiking in the area, but i'm not gonna bring that up again.

One of this forum's trusted posters gave information about public transport as far North as Lake Placid. It seemed reliable to me, but i cannot personally confirm it and I would plan on parking in or near West Point somewhere and then switching to public transport.

A car in Manhattan is not a complete deal killer, but you never use it and you have to pay to store it, so it's kind of a pain in the lower regions.

I'm not an expert either. But when I first moved to NYC, my parents would visit me by driving to the White Plains Metro North station, and then taking Metro North into the city. They had day parking at the White Plains station but I don't know if they allow overnight parking.

I've heard positive reports about parking at Weehawken Ferry Terminal. http://nywaterway.com/PortImperialWeehawkenTerminal.aspx

I've also heard parking is pretty cheap at the Journal Square PATH station: http://www.panynj.gov/path/journal-square-station.html

Before you worry about where to park, figure out your entire budget for hotel + parking (+ a more expensive commuter train ride if you end up parking in a commuter lot somewhere outside of the city). Sometimes people don't stop to realize that the price of the train ticket from the suburbs eats up a lot of their savings for distant parking, especially if they are in NYC for just a few days.

For less expensive hotel options in NYC, look at hotels in Long Island City (Queens). Country Inn & Suites in LIC is a good choice for budget accommodations. It's a very quick subway ride into the city. There is very limited free parking, but there are reasonably priced pay lots near the hotel. Not sure exactly how expensive they are.

Note that not all LIC hotels are near a subway stop, so be careful when looking at other options. Use google maps to verify that it's near the subway.

There are also good hotels in Brooklyn near subway stops like the Nu Hotel, Sheraton, Aloft, etc. These are the closest. A bit further out are Holiday Inn Express, Super 8, La Quinta and Best Western Plus.

You could try Airbnb to find accommodation in Hoboken or Jersey City, from where you can get into Manhattan fairly easily. (Hoboken's a pretty nice town, too.) Perhaps some of the airbnb options will come with a parking spot.

I haven't visited NYC from the New Jersey side in a dozen years in the shadow of what was then called "Giants Stadium". When I did I found
  • parking was free and adequate
  • NJ in general was remarkably cheap
  • I should have planned better to be near public transportation into the city.

A lot can change in a dozen years, but that's my 2-cents worth.
