Late night Thai food on Bangkok stopover?
Hi travellers,Myself, my partner and her 11 year old son have an upcoming stopover in Bangkok from 00:55 until 09:35 (it's a Monday morning).
My questions:
- Does anyone know any late night restaurants or food markets where I could get some good thai food? My first thought is the Khoh San road, but not sure if that's too far away / too touristy / too late etc...
- Would it be safe to take a 11 year old boy at this time of night?
- Is this realistic time to get some yummy thai food and back to the airport?
Thanks in advance!
Bryan

Let's see.Flight arrives 0:55hrs - min 1 hour through Immigration and baggage collection, if any, and store it - takes it to 02:00hrs.
Taxi to town/Khao San road or wheverever - 45 minutes 02:45hrs
Taxi at 05:30 to get back at airport at 06:35hrs for the 09:35hrs flight
So you have 2 hrs and 45 minutes to eat your late night food (might be a bit hard to find taxi at 5am but head to any hotel and they can call one for you.
Certainly do-able but makes it a hell of a late night for the boy.

Taxis will be on a meter so thats not a problem, but you wont find much open by the time you get downtown at 2:30am. The stalls at Soi 38 in Thong Lor (next to the Skytrain station) are apparently open till 3-4am but I have not been there at that time personally so can't guarantee it.Having said that, it is one of the best places to get a good mix of Thai street food.
Thats where I would head if I were you.
And yes it is very safe. Just keep an eye out for the deranged homeless people that seem to be at maximum power that time of the morning.

Those times are all exaggerated by a factor two or so. Especially if your bags are routed through and you don't need to do any check-ins, you can get through immigration in about half an hour, then another half hour to (almost) anywhere in town. So that makes it around 2am. Not sure Khao San is the best place though. Then if you're checked in already for a 9:35am departure, I'd probably get in a taxi about 7:30am. (Normally 8, but then you start getting into rush hour, so I'd play it safe and pick 7:30am. Leaving 5:30am is WWAAY early; you'd be there 6am.

you will have plenty of time to eat , my query would be what are you going to do for the rest of the time, from around 4am onwards ?There are plenty of late night food stalls, but finding a good restaurant might be harder.....and your 11yo boy might be wondering about some of the customers.......
Your taxi driver would almost certainly know somewhere to eat, but it probably would n't be to your taste, unless you are a fan of issan food !

If it's another long flight it might be good that the kid is dead tired.;-)
If it is a shortish flight might want to get a cheap room someplace to crash out for a couple of hours.
I would recommend Sukhumvid Road Soi 38 located right at Thonglor BTS station (Not Thonglor Soi 38, that takes you to a different place) over KSR (or lower Sukhumvid as between soi 3-21) as well, you get better food at those food stalls and the clientele is all right.
Wonder however what to do after 04.00 when stalls close down. Maybe return early to airport for lack of other stuff to do at night.

+1 for the food court at the airport. I've not eaten there there but I'd wager the food is better than you'll find at most tourist orientated restaurants and hotels. It's also cheap so you can taste a lot of different dishes. Here's a video which will give you a good idea of the place:

and here's some info on finding it:
