15You do realize that your "walk into Mexico" at El Paso brings you into Ciudad Juarez, one of the most dangerous cities on the planet, i.e. ground zero for narco gang violence? You're unlikely to face any problems if you are sticking to the main shopping area across the border but you never know...

16Ciudad Juarez is not that bad during the day time, especially not in the pedestrian areas. There are a LOT of people around always, the chance of something happening to you is very very slim. I would be careful after dark though. I visited last year and had a nice stroll around the city. Would recommend if you're ever in El Paso and want to see something different (or want to have authentic Mexican food for cheap). However, among Mexican border towns, I'd strongly recommend Tecate over Juarez. This has more of a sleepy-little-Mexican-town feel, is much safer, and you can get an awesome free tour at the Tecate brewery! (If you call ahead.)

17Thanks for the thoughts.
The walk into Mexico is just that. Only intend staying short time to say been there done that. Have to be very unlucky to have any trouble and have no intentions to walk up the alley ways.
I'd like to send a personal message to a couple of the replies but when I arrive at that page is says Private messaging is disabled. Have sent an enquiry to Lonely planet but in the mean time awaiting an answer does any one on the forum tell me how to enable it. Thanks

18Just found out cant send a private message. Thanks to everyone. Thanks trekker502 for the info on Woodall's. Have sent an email to Good sam for membership (Flying J fuel rewards)and they suggest do it during our 9 days in Longbeach, prior to starting our RV trip. Have joined the rv.net forum and a lot of posters have suggested Walmart etc for overnight parking. Thanks once again

19To ianw6705. Thanks for your suggestions. Hadn't forgotten to thank you but was waiting a reply on how to send a private message from LP. Found out i can't. Have included Glen canyon on your recommendation (doing the dam tour) understand your reason to go to Bryce via Zion(great scenery) but have been to both a fair while ago. Main reason to go back to btyce was when we last went nearly got snowed in (loved it) and now want to see it without snow. Also went to Mesa Verde last time so having a look at Montezuma castle this time. main reason for Colaraso NM is meeting a US Navy mate and his wife for a two day get together (met him when I was on detatchment in Hawai with the airforce - go figure)
Have to leave Redfish and Crater for another time as I has to lock in Yellowstone (memorial weekend) and Yosemite (had to stay up until 1.30 am for the booking window- glad I did as the campground was chokers within an hour.
Rest assured I have planned mainly short driving days (eg 250 miles) with afew longer days(400 miles) and my wife can drive, can't be any worse than the Nullabor or the Hay Plains. Plenty of rest days after the longer ones Eg across Texas, Louisiana have 4 days Everglades. Across Illinois, Iowa, have agood break in Badlands and Custer.
Thanks for your suggestions much appreciated
