Connections at LAX

Flying into LAX from Sydney with Qantas at 6.40 am and connecting to an American Airlines flight to Chicago at 8.55 am. It was originally 9.35 am but Qantas have just notified the change to 8.55 am. Is this going to be a mad scramble, or should we be able to do it comfortably?

(Roughly) 2 hours should be enough time, but I wouldn't call it "comfortable."

Remember, upon your arrival you must pass through immigrations, collect any checked luggage, pass through customs, then recheck your bags (usually putting them on a conveyor at a designated desk outside customs). You will then need to change terminals and reenter security.

Don't dawdle.

Usually you can get through LAX Immigration and customs after collecting your checked luggage within
one hour-- providing you don't have any complicating Passport issues. Once you get off the Quantas flight-
quickly get to the shortest passport line. Then comes luggage collection and Customs. Once you exit the building, then quickly get to the American
Airlines terminal (hopefully you've already pre-printed out your boarding pass) which is about a ten-minute
walk. Taxis don't shorten the time much, but they will be at the curb.

Libby, The American Airlines Terminal is in the very next building right next to the International Terminal-
where Qantas will be arriving. It's about a 5- minute walk so I think two hours is more than adequate.

It's a bit tight, but assuming you bought the tickets as a single itinerary you should be fine. American and Qantas are both OneWorld alliance members and codeshare partners, and they expect that people arriving on the Qantas flight will be feeding into American's network. Worst case scenario, they're responsible for getting you onto a later flight to Chicago.

OK, seems do-able - I'll stop worrying, thanks.

That flight is among the earliest international arrivals in the morning, so hopefully the lines are not bad. But there are 350 other people on the plane. Try to be one of the first ones to make it to immigration... it can make a bigger difference than you think. As long as this is a single booking, I would not worry.

It'll be fine. Plus, if you bought both flights on one ticket, you can always talk to an airline employee always available there for transferring passengers who can have you skip the immigration line if necessary. Both airlines are in one alliance and there will be lots of people doing connections. The airlines will want to make sure everyone makes it as much as possible.
