Popcorn in China sucks. It's always sweetened. I loathe sweet popcorn and want the savory or salty, which seems to be an alien concept around here. I'd go ahead and bring the kernels. Might be best to bring them in their original jar or bag so it's clear it's a processed consumer edible not raw commercial sample grain. I'd be nearly 100% sure that Chinese Customs won't be an issue.
Popcorn should be salty and/or buttery. Sweet popcorn is fine occasionally, but imitation Fiddle Faddle shouldn't be the only option.
Popcorn in China does indeed suck.
Just got back from my China trip and I loved it.
I know now that Carrafour nor Jenny Lou (love that place) have popcorn in bulk. Each has little bags of microwave popcorn.
Funny people talk about the sweet popcorn. This is what I made witht the popcorn I brought along. I made the popcorn in a wok then added corn syrup (that I also brought along) then added sugar to make popcorn balls.
It was a blast to make.
BTW I loved my China trip.
pss If anyone has any suggestions for short weekend trips out of Beijing I am open for suggestions. (This will be for my China Part II trip.)

I am in Canada for the holidays now and I actually miss the sweet Chinese popcorn from the movie theaters. If only it was butter that they put in popcorn here....22

- Kaifeng-Shaolin-Luoyang/Longmen-Huashan-Xi'an (Pick as many as you want. About 1 per day. 2 days minimum for Xi'an. These are all along a single high speed train line)
- Pingyao
- Qingdao
- Tianjin (can be done as a day trip)
- Shanghai/Suzhou/Hangzhou (these are reachable in 6 hours by train, making them feasible weekend trips from BJ)
