Vienna main train station
A couple of questions about the hbf... I know that it's still under construction but I have a booking from vienna to budapest on dec 19, 2012 and the confirmation email says that the train departs from wien hbf. Is this correct? Because I heard that only a limited number of domestic trains are currently operating from there.If true, where exactly is the station? I can't seem to find it on the public trainsportation network map nor in google maps.

A section of the new Vienna Hauptbahnhof opened for limited use about a week ago. Much work on the station yet to be completed.Most trains to/from there service ( mostly regional service )
the area east of Vienna.
A few trains from there go to Budapest .
Many Budapest trains still leave from Vienna Meidling train station.
if the instructions show a departure from the HBF this is the new Hauptbahnhof.
Acess from city center in a few minutes via Ubahn / Subway U-1 ( Sudtirolerplatz ) or Streetcar " D "

It would have been helpful if you had given us the train number or the departure time. Most direct Budapest bound trains leave from Meidling, Westbahnhof or Huetteldorf. Slower trains in the same direction (which end at Bruck or Gyor where you have to change to another train) leave usually from Hauptbahnhof.4
I forgot the details of the train I booked online but upon going to the hbf to pick up the tickets, I was told that I need to switch trains in Bratislava6
Yes but actually I forgot to mention that when I booked the tickets online and went to go pick them up, I was told that the ticket I just purchased was only valid from Vienna to Bratislava even though the reservation said that it was from Vienna to Budapest. So I need to buy a ticket to Budapest when I get to Bratislava but do you know if I can buy tickets through the conductor on the train? I have a very short connection time of 23 minutes and don't want to stand in line at the ticketing office and risk missing the it.7
The last time I was in Bratislava there were very few people buying tickets at the station. I don't know the law in Slovakia and Hungary, but in Austria you would pay a hefty fine if you didn't have a valid ticket. 23 minutes should be more than enough, though. (But check that your train to Bratislava arrivers at thesame station you want to depart from - some trains go to Petrselka (or a similar name, not too sure), from where you can't get a train to Budapest and you wouldn't get to the main station in time.8

There is still the possibility to buy tickets through the Austrian conductor in long distance trains, a surcharge of € 3 will be added. Only in regional trains (train numbers starting with S, R, REX ...) you will pay a fine. See ÖBB website.Two years ago I bought a ticket through a Slovac conductor, it was working just fine.
But as wrightone is saying 23 minutes is plenty for buying a ticket in the station, much more important is the question if you arrive in the same station. Usually the trains to Budapest leave from Bratislava hl. st. (hlavna stanica, main station] and not Bratislava Petržalka.
