Chicago, Quebec City, Philly or Boston during the holidays?

Hi all,

I'm planning on spending the holiday season back east but I'm not quite sure where I should go. From online research, it seems like Quebec City and Chicago would both be quite nice during the holiday season.

Has anyone been to either of these places during this time or does anybody have other recommendations?

I'm also considering going to NY for 2-3 days as I have a friend there. What is drawing me to Chicago and Philly is that I have never been there.

Also - if people have recommendations on where to spend Christmas vs. New Year's, that would be great!

Cheers.

You'd probably get better answers on the USA branch, this is the Canada branch.

Yeah, Quebec City is in Canada so I figured that I would post here as well. I did post in the US branch too.

Sorry about that, I read the title too fast and completely missed the Quebec City part.

Does this mean you are dropping Montreal? I'd take the Montreal/Quebec City combination over the others. If you are just considering Quebec City then your question asks to compare apples and oranges. The other cities are large, cosmopolitan centres. Quebec City, though the greater area has >500000 people, is much smaller and more intimate. Hence, it depends on what kind of urban experience you want. Certainly, Quebec City will have a more winter-like atmosphere. There's already snow on the ground and it should persist through the holidays. Though, of course, it'll also be much colder.

Hey, no, I'm still going to Montreal - just thinking about adding 1-2 cities to the list since I have about 2 weeks to travel.

Thanks for your input!

If it were me, I'd do 4 days Montreal, 2 days Quebec, 4 days NYC, 3 days Boston, 1 day Philadelphia. If you are with a significant other, I'd trade Philadelphia for another day in Quebec because it's very romantic. I'd also be happy spending all the US time in Chicago, 8 days to really get to know it...or 6 days Montreal and 6 days Chicago...or scrap Boston and Philadelphia and go to Toronto. Oh, and don't forget about Ottawa. I really like the city; it would be nice for a day or two. (Sorry, being Canadian, I'm biased toward and more informed about places up here.)

Basically, as long as you have a minimum of 6 days in Montreal and Quebec then I don't think you can go wrong with any other combination of cities.

Quebec City - Romantic, Historic, Small, and Charming ( you must stay in the Old City). Chicago - One of the great cities in the American lexicon. Iconic, Cultured, Grand. Boston - Quebec City, writ larger and American. Philly, not so much (just kidding). All your options are great destinations, but to narrow your options you should consider not the place you wish to go, but rather, the experience you wish to have.
