itinerary advice 22 days Jan-Feb + other questions

Hi There, after lurking for a while I still need some advice.

Me and my girlfriend are planning to visit CR in february, probably from january 27 to february 18 but airline hasnt been booked yet. We are having some difficulties figuring out the best route and wether to rent a car for our stay or not.

Our objective is quite common, to explore the variaty of nature and wildlife CR has to offer and relax on some beaches as well. We would prefer to do this at ease, not rushing through the whole country never staying anywhere more than one night. We like nature, but not necessarily ziplines.

Our total budget (excluding airfare) is roughly US$2200 per person. Where possible we prefer to travel midrange (hotel, private room).

We made a list of things that looked nice to us, but i think this list is a bit too long for our stay. Besides this I am having some trouble to decide wether/when we need a car or can use shuttles, taxis and public transportation.

Monteverde - Palo Verde - Liberia
Rincon de la vieja
Liberia - La Fortuna
arenal
La fortuna - Sarapique - Poas
Poas Volcano
Brauilio Carrillo
Irazu volcano - Limon
Limon - Tortuguero
Tortuguero
Cahuita
Gandoca Manzanillo
Cahuita- Limon
Bocas del Torro
Cocovado
Manuel Antonio - San Jose

i'm basically going to ignore your list. it's way too long to comment on.

for some possible itineraries, i would look at http://www.anywherecostarica.com they have a questionnaire feature and once you have answered the questions about your preferences, they will offer a proposed itinerary for you. you can use them as a booking agent, adjust your itinerary or just go on your own, based on their suggestions.

for transportation: there's no reason to use the same mode of transportation all the time. you can rent a car for part of the time.... used the shared van shuttle where it makes sense.... even ride the public bus on some routes.

first, figure out where you are going. then, we can provide advice about transportation options to those places and some recommendations.

try to plan your itinerary in a "loop" - which will expedite your transportation options and maximize your time in the country.

figure out which airport you want to fly into: lir liberia or sjo san jose. this will determine, to a great extent, the feasibility of various locations.

look here for distances and travel times: http://www.yourtravelmap.com

Agree that your list is far too long.....you can't see the whole country in 3 weeks ;-)

I'd cut it down to maximum 6 sleeping stops in that time.....or even 4/5 if you really want to see Corcovado.

Then as wiremu says, you can get some more specific advice on how to get between them.....

Thank you for the comments.

I didnt know it was possible to fly to liberia directly, this could be a very good idea. We could start at Rincon de la vieja and work our way east, then south back towards SJ to fly home from there.

I'll get back to the drawing board and narrow down our stops.

with your amount of time in the country, it's a very good idea to fly into liberia and out of san jose.

CaƱo Island has been closed as a park for almost a year due to sanitation problems. You can still boat out to ocean waters and dive / snorkel there.
