Guatemala/Belize/Honduras - 4 weeks January 2012

Hi,

I am 21, went backpacking around Mexico for a month last summer and fell in love with CA and am going back for more - I need tips for my itinrerary and a few other questions please!
We are flying into Guatemala City planning to spend about two weeks in Guatemala - then heading over to Belize for a week-ish, and then going south down into Honduras where we will fly out of San Pedro Sula.
I want to include these places (below) on the trip but can anyone tell me what sensible order and approximate times to spend in each place?
Also if I have missed out something essential, please share!

Fly into: Guatemala City
Antigua – Lake Atitlan
(chichicastenango/coban)
Semuc Chempey
Tikal
Caye caulker
(rio dulce)
Copan
Roatan, Bay Islands
Fly out: San Pedro Sulas (is this airport okay / safe - we will need to spend the night there before as our flgiht is mid-morning)

Thanks people, looking forward to receiving your wisdom!

It may be Cheaper to fly into Cancun MX, make way down Yucatan coast via ruins and and do some diving in Belize, then enjoy Guatemala culture and call it a day. But your plan is possible, it is just that Guatemala has a lot see, Atitlan lake villages are worth 4 nights or more. Getting to Bay Islands is time consuming, when you are all the way up north in Tikal/Belize border, getting to/from BI is a haul, from Copan alone a bus to SPS then another bus to La Cieba, then the last ferry to BI, same in reverse but 2 days to GC non stop moving....ehh

Boat to Belize and dive there from MX, then to Tikal and down to rest of Guatemala.

If you dont need to dive, then fly into GC and hit Copan on the side.

To be honest, I'd skip Belize entirely. You'll be seeing the best Mayan sites in the region (Tikal & Copan), and the beaches & snorkelling in Honduras are better than Caye Caulker.

I like the 2 weeks in Guatemala but I'd choose between Belize and Honduras - trying to do both you'd lose too much time to travel.

San Pedro Sulas airport is both OK and safe. I wouldnt want to spend the night there, however. I always fly out around noon, so I can stay at Omoa the night before (2 hr transit). The drift I get is, it's safe enough to stay in downtown SPS.

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful.
I will look to stay in Omoa before flying out of SPS airport - sounds like booking our return from this airport wasnt the best idea but its done now so hopefully the travelling from belize to honduras wont take up too much time and i'm sure there are great things to do everywhere and along the way!
All itinerary advice/tips appreciated... keep 'em coming! :)

You could also spend the last night at D&D Brewery, Lago de Yajoa. It's about the same time to SPS as Omoa. Be warned, dont let them slip you none of their fruited-up beer.

Last year I stayed the last night in P Cortes, at H Costa Azul on playa Faro. It cost 50 bucks, plus 2 taxi rides. A family place. Everything in downtown PC is gritty and steel-grated. A couple I walked a ways with checked in at Hotel el Centro, which resembled a prison.

In Omoa, I stayed at Hotel Michelle. Kim, a Canadian runs it. Steve from Spencer Indiana hangs there some. Tell 'em Indiana Eddy sent you. 300 L single, private bath. Up the road toward the highway, Roli's is 150L, shared bath. A wooded courtyard, a few blocks from the coast. Roli is a bit cantankerous.
