Which consulate should I go to?

Hi I have a question I just can't find the answer to so I am going to ask the travelers of this site. I am going to Brazil in a few months and I need to have some documents authenticated and stamped at the Brazilian consulate in my state one is my Birth certificate . The problem I have is that there are two consulates in my state "I live in California" and I as born near the one in the northern part of my state but now I live in the southern part of my state . So do I need to send my documents to the consulate in northern california because I was born there or can I take them to the consulate near where I live? Also I need to get a tourist visa which consulate should I apply to? thank you for any help you can offer.

Common sense would dictate that either would be suitable? They are both 'in your state' aren't they. But I suggest you check their websites to make sure they both do certifications & visas, as I'm not sure why one state would have two consulates.

Well, I guess "common sense" isn't the way to go then.
As far as visas, you are supposed to apply at the Brazilian Consulate that has jurisdiction over your residence. If you live in the southern part of the state of California, this would probably be the Consulate in L.A. Check their web page. It should clearly state which California counties it covers. Also, while you're there, read carefully the requirements that Consulate has for visas, as there are slight differences among the Consulates.
Each Brazilian Consulate in California has jurisdiction over a number of U.S. states, each one over a different set of U.S. states.
As far as documents, you must get each "reconhecido" (recognized and stamped) at the Brazilian Consulate that has jurisdiction over the place where the document was emitted. For example, an FBI criminal background check (which you would need to apply for permanent residence in Brazil) is emitted in Washington, D.C. and needs to be recongnized by the Consulate that has jurisdiction there. This would apply to oyur birth certificate too. So if you were born in Northern California, you probably have to send it to the Brazilian Consulate in San Francisco. But again, check that Consulate's web page.
Welcome to Brazilian burro-cracy.

Ha! I guess I should never put 'common sense' in the same sentence as 'Brazilian Consulate' :-)

Los Angeles consulate - actually in the City of Beverly Hills.
San Francisco consulate

"The Consulate General of Brazil in Los Angeles serves the residents of the American states of Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming and the following counties in California: Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura. Also the following American islands in the Pacific: Johnston, Midway, Wake, Howland, Jarvis and Baker, Palmira and Kingman."

"At the San Francisco consulate, we have jurisdiction over the States of Oregon, Washington, Alaska and in within California, the counties of Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Inyo, Kings, Lake, Lassen, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Modoc, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sacramento, San Benedito, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne, Yolo, and Yuba".

They say "residents of," not "those born in . . ." Note, in the visa section, apointments required.
